Call for Submissions: Calgary Creative City Collaboration (C4) - [Urban Stationary]

[Urban Stationary] Call for Proposals & Submissions

We are a creative collective for the citizens of Calgary currently seeking non-profit
status. We work, play, eat, breathe, cry, smile, laugh, LIVE in Calgary's urban
environment and we want the environment to be responsive to the ideas and dreams of
Calgarians. To do this, it needs creative contributions from its citizens, so we want to
turn Calgary into an urban laboratory.

We have planned a series of events throughout the Summer of 2012, with four of these
taking place in Calgary Transit LRT stations. We held our first event, a pop-up art
gallery on June 29, 2012 with an excellent turnout, meaning great exposure for artists
and a vibrant breath of fresh air into Brentwood Station. Our events are intended to
enrich the public experience and make ordinary spaces, extraordinary.

[Urban Stationary] is one of these projects.

The intent is to install and showcase semi-permanent artworks for approximately one
month at Anderson Station on the Southeast LRT line. Because of the semi-permanent
nature of this exhibition, the proposed work should be able to resist vandalism and take
up little to no floor space. Ideal projects could include murals and installations, but we
want your proposal to be truest to your vision of altering this space – we can work
together to bring the proposal and space to unity. This project will transform the station,
creating a unique and unexpected experience for Calgarians.

While a visit to Anderson Station will be valuable for informing your proposal, here are a
couple of photos of the station to get you started:

A few niceties.

Calgary Transit has been very supportive of this project: not only have they offered the
exhibition space, but they have also agreed to cover the costs of producing the chosen
work (within reason) and are also offering a small, cash honorarium per artist.

Other details.

An unveiling event will take place Friday, August 10, 2012 between 5-9pm. The work
must be available for installation two days prior to this date.

Who we're looking for: Local artists.

If you are a local artist (in or near the Calgary area), we encourage you to apply. As a
collaborative group ourselves, we encourage groups of people to apply together with a
proposal. The honorarium will apply to each member of the group (within reason – to be
determined on a case by case basis). Artists are also encouraged to promote their work
at these events, though sales are not permitted in the stations.

Submission Packages should include:

Name(s) and contact information.
A short proposal/summary of proposed work.
Rough illustrations of what you hope to install in a station.
An approximate budget of material supplies for your proposed work.
A few examples of previous, relevant work.

Notes:

Successful submissions will be notified via email.
Artists may need to work together with C4 and Calgary Transit on some
proposals in keeping with Calgary Transit guidelines.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
