January’s First Thursday celebration, the monthly cultural crawl through the Cultural District, is January 7.
Running all day, January’s First Thursday event lineup includes music, theatre, visual art and restaurant deals and the launch of the 24th annual High Performance Rodeo.
Midway transforms the Centre Court of the EPCOR CENTRE into a high-flying carnival with sideshow vaudevillians, shadow puppets, laptop virtuosos, gypsies and an eclectic array of indie musicians.
In collaboration with Alberta Ballet, Tubular Bells is performed by four world-class pianists – the German/Canadian Bergmann Piano Duo, the Netherlands’ Jeroen van Veen and 2009 Honens International Piano Competition laureate Evgeny Starodubtsev.
Grandstand showcases Calgary’s hottest musicians as they team up with visual artists to create an unforgettable collage of sound and film.
Triangle Gallery offers First Thursday-goers a glimpse of its show Beyond Printmaking: Images in Objects, which was recently exhibited in Poland.
Art Central offers a mix of galleries, studios, boutiques and art openings, including the installation Your face, like a lone nocturnal garden in Worlds where Suns spin round!, which is the first exhibition for The New Gallery in their new Art Central space.
First Thursdays are Calgary’s monthly cultural crawl and are presented by the Cultural District. On the first Thursday of every month, arts organizations, attractions, hotels and restaurants in the Cultural District stay open late and offer special programming, deals and events. Starting as early as breakfast and going as late as 2am, the majority of events are offered after 5pm.
