Trends
This is a glimpse of what we’ve learned so far.
Where are we going as artists and as a city?
What else do you know?
What do you think about these trends?
Please add to and comment on these speculative statements:
1.Collaboration is an increasingly prominent trend. Linked to collaboration are synergy, autonomy, and partnership.
2.Calgary has increasing flow of international activity. For example, more Calgary artists are recognized world-wide and Calgary organizations are inviting more international artists.
3.Calgary is a hot bed of artistic innovation in all artistic disciplines, from emerging to established.
4.Calgary arts organizations are gaining more recognition nationally. This last year Calgary Opera, Alberta Ballet, One Yellow Rabbit and the visual arts were all recognized by prominent national magazines.
5.Our demographic is changing. We represent an increasingly diverse population.
6.Although we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada, approximately 129,000 citizens fall under the low-income category.
7.Calgary has unprecedently growth in population, commercial and residential development.
8.Calgary currently has the lowest downtown vacancy rate in the world, reports CBC.
9.Calgary has one of the youngest populations in Canada.
10.A large number of arts organizations big and small are in need of new space or have expansion plans.
11.The arts are taking more of a leadership roll in participating in programs for youth, health and social services.
12.Arts and culture are “bursting at the seams” in Calgary.
What are we forgetting?
What other trends can you add?
Do you agree these are trends?
How will these trends impact the arts in Calgary?

would like to know if the
would like to know if the percentage of artists making a living at their art has changed in the last 20 years. We need to be able to feed ourselves in order to concentrate on our art!
high school connection
In order to maintain and grow support for the arts, we need to nourish and support the student population of artists and performers! We have new focus and appreciation for the arts in the school system currently. You should see what emerging young artsist can do! These kids are the future of arts appreciation and our future artists yet once they move away from school, they lose the support and guidance they need to continue their support of the arts.
Along with support and liasons with student programs, come support from their parents, grandparents, and friends. It's a way to communicate with the masses and find contacts that will maintain galleries, fill theatres, and make the calgary arts community more enterprising.

Disturbing trend of schools reducing music programs. Why not start an orchestra school? Where are the strings in our education system? If kids don't learn about orchestras you can't expect them to attend orchestras as adults.

Calgary theatre happens throughout the city, not just downtown. The allocation of rehearsal and performance space should reflect this.

On a regular basis the U of C has a community music program for students that is not very well known, but they are running out of space. A larger community music school for any interested students and bands would help.
