Ideas from Event #7
When asked what they liked about Calgary, the participants at Ghost River Rediscovery said they appreciated the variety of options available, including the Calgary Zoo, Glenbow Museum, movies, public sculptures and skateboarding opportunities. Their biggest priority though, was sports facilities. Everyone also mentioned that many of their cultural experiences take place at home, through the internet, video games and DVDs.
Participants expressed concerns about accessing cultural spaces in Calgary. Many were limited because they use public transportation, and many also felt they did not know what was available in their city. Also, none of the participants took arts in their school curriculum, but many expressed an interest in learning more about music and film.
When asked what they would do to improve their city, participants had many ideas. Many were concerned with helping citizens in need by providing employment and better housing for the homeless. Providing free education to citizens, as well as many more youth programs were also important. Stopping automobile production and pollution was an idea appreciated by everyone, as well as improving roads to prevent accidents and reduce congestion.
In terms of cultural space, top priorities included more recreation centres, hockey arenas, pools and gyms, as well as a rebuilt McMahon stadium. Many also suggested the Stampede be turned into a year round feature like Disneyland. Participants also expressed a desire for museums centred around their interests, like music and medieval history.
