Cities Welcome Provincial Focus on Culture
(Calgary, AB) -"Today's launch of the new cultural policy for the province is an important step towards securing the quality of life expected by Albertans. It is notable that provincial political parties are engaging in a healthy debate on the best ways to support culture in the province. As representatives of the agencies charged with arts and culture development in our respective cities, we welcome this focus and commend the Government and the Opposition for prioritizing culture.
The challenges and opportunities surrounding cultural development in Alberta are both daunting and invigorating. We look forward to working closely with the Province to realize the goals outlined in the policy. We know that both Edmonton and Calgary have much to offer as the homes of thousands of artists, our major cultural institutions, and the forming ground for the next generations of artists. We also recognize that our cities have a role to play in ensuring that cultural opportunities are available for all Albertans, urban and rural, and look forward to finding creative ways to offer those opportunities.
Finally, we welcome the Province's commitment to increased resources to support achieving their goals. The arts and the cultural industries have received significant new investments by the City Councils of Calgary and Edmonton, and indeed feature prominently in the long term plans of both cities. Having the Province as a strong partner is fundamental as we look towards vibrant futures for both cities."
