Theatre A Go-Go: Summer Drama/Theatre Camps for Children and Youth

PHYSICAL THEATRE SCHOOL
T.A.G.G. – You’re it!

Who: 7—12 year olds
What: THE ADVENTURES OF THE LORAX - Imagine the land of the Truffula trees and, under the trees, the brown Bar-ba-loots frisking about in their Bar-ba-loot suits. Through rhyme & Hip Hop, players will explore the various characters from an adaptation of The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. Players will be given a character to develop and by using their bodies and voices, will express their character with more confidence. They will develop their communication skills by sharing with friends and family on the last day of classes. Players will also learn an aspect of Theatre Stagecraft and assist in building props, set or costume pieces.
When: July 16-20 from 9am - 4:00pm or Aug. 20-24 from 9am - 4:00pm (Pre & post care available for a minimal fee).

Who: 7—12 year olds
What: THE ADVENTURES OF PETER PAN – Imagine the magical land of Neverland where characters like Peter, Wendy and Hook never grow up but give form to feelings about the unknown, freedom and responsibility. Players will explore the characters from an adaptation of Peter Pan and learn how to express those characters with more confidence, through their bodies and voices. Players will be given a character to develop their communication skills, and play for friends and family on the last day of classes. Players will also learn an aspect of Theatre Stagecraft and assist in building props or set pieces.
When: July 23-27 from 9am - 4:00pm or Aug. 27-31 from 9am - 4:00pm (Pre & post care available for a minimal fee)

Where: All summer camps take place at Morpheus Rehearsal Centre (Parkdale Comm. Assoc. - 3512 5 Ave. N.W.)

Investment: $265 ($25 discount for early registration/return players/multiple family members/Calgary Kids Club members) or $400.00 for a two week session.

LEVEL 1 - The Voice Over Adventure (Introduction)...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to venture behind the microphone? Now's your chance to embark on a exciting voyage to explore Voice Over and all it's possibilities. You'll work with professional Voice Over Artists. You'll work with actual scripts. You'll re-create a real commercial all the while making new friends and stretching your comfort zone in a safe and fun environment. Your Adventure will climax with a studio recording session of which you'll receive a copy.

Cost: $350.00+gst

Class consists of approximately 16 hours of training (breaks included) either over a weekend or 4 – 4 hour weekly classes. The training will be split between a classroom utilizing a microphone /Public Address system (no record) and a studio (record).
Class concludes with a brief description including a Q & A regarding the Voice Over business and the marketplace Locally, Nationally, and Internationally.

Course Description:
This 4 week introductory class will introduce students to the technical aspects of black and white darkroom photography. This course will cover basic photography, camera mechanics, negative film processing, contact prints, enlarging, silver gelatin print processing and negative contrast control. No experience necessary, all skill levels welcome.

Week One: Photography basics and camera mechanics
Week Two: Film processing
Week Three: Contact prints and enlarging
Week Four: Independent practice, questions, troubleshooting.

Requirements:
No experience necessary. All students should bring a 35mm camera with a through-the-lens (TTL) light meter and a roll of ilford black and white film to the first class. Students will be required to provide their own paper. Chemistry will be provided.

Instructor Bio:
Hakan Temucin is an international artist based in Calgary, AB. He received an MFA in photography at the University of Calgary in 2011 and a BFA at Marmara University in Istanbul. With over 12 years of experience Hakan has exhibited widely and specializes in black and white photography and darkroom processes.

Under the guidance of Susan Lexa, we will be exploring projection, speech song, singing as a learnable skill, singing anxiety, choosing and preparing appropriate songs for auditions and more! In class we will work on developing and promoting a healthy vocal technique that allows the singers to explore various musical styles, while enhancing effective communication of text.

The new Arts and Cultural Management Diploma comprises two years of full time study and practice, although for those with other post-secondary studies, we still offer the flexibility of a certificate exit after one year.

Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers: Basic Camera Workshop

Basic Camera: Phil Letourneau- Saturday June 16, 10-5
The Filmmakers most basic, and most important tool is the motion picture camera. Only with a thorough understanding of camera operation can the filmmaker concentrate on the more creative aspects of cinematography. This daylong workshop will focus on the image gathering process of filmmaking. Topics that will be covered are camera care and operation, lighting control, exposure and filtration, lenses, camera and scratch testing and film stocks. This workshop will cover 16mm cameras. Together the participants will shoot film during the course of this workshop, a later date will then be scheduled for screening and discussing the variations in the different film stocks.

Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers: Shooting Motion Picture with the DSLR

Shooting Motion Picture with the DSLR Canon 5D
Saturday June 2, 2012 10am-5pm

This 1 day comprehensive workshop will focus on the best ways to utilize a DSLR for any project, as well as troubleshooting any scenarios or issues that may arise from DSLR production. If you have your own camera please feel free to bring it.
The workshop will cover the main principles of the camera. Participants will learn the basics of the camera and use this knowledge to go into the field and start recording images with sound.

Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers: Super 8 Transfer Workshop

Super 8 Transfer Workshop
Saturday April 28, 1st Session 10am-1pm and 2nd Session 2pm-5pm
Learn to use the CSIF’s Video WorkPrinter-XP Super 8 transfer machine. Transfer your super 8 film and achieve stunning, ultra high quality transfers of both reguar 8mm and super 8mm film to NTSC video. The video WorkPrinter uses a video camera and a Apple computer to capture your 8mm film to a computer hard drive with 100% frame accuracy and without ever touching tape, guaranteeing the clearest, most crips picture possible next to a Rank telecine transfer. This three hour course will familiarize participants with the CSIF’s super 8 transfer facility and certify them to operate it. Each participant will complete a video transfer of 1 - 50’ reel of 8mm or Super 8 film to be transferred.

Who: 6 - 8 yr. olds What: Folktales from around the World
Imagine the world as it is explained through Folk Tales. Players will explore with their voices and bodies to express themselves through a Folk Tale from China, Africa, or South America and will share this Tale with friends and family on the last day of classes. Players will also learn some aspect of theatre Stagecraft.
When: Saturdays 10am-12pm April 14-June 16 (no class May 19)

Who: 9 - 12 yr. olds What: Androcles and the Lion
Imagine Italy in the 1600’s, a zany world where masked characters were highly expressive. Shakespeare received many inspirations for his plays from this slapstick comedy. Players will explore these characters and play with an adaptation of an Aesop Fable called Androcles and the Lion and will share this play with friends and family on the last day of classes. Players will also learn some aspect of theatre Stagecraft.
When: Sundays 1-3pm April 15—June 17(no class May 20)

Who: Homeschoolers 9 - 13 yr. olds What: Ancient Greek Theatre
(With guest instructor Gail Whiteford)
Imagine and explore the world of Ancient Greece, where the mysteries of nature were explained through Myths. Players will develop their voice and bodies in order to express the characters and the style of theatre. By utilizing an adapted Greek myth, “Jason and the Golden Fleece”, players will play with more confidence for friends and families on the last day of classes. Players will also learn some aspect of theatre Stagecraft. This class is integrated with the Alberta Education curriculum.
When: Tuesdays 10-12pm April 17-June 12
Where: Morpheus Rehearsal Centre

Who: 13-17 yr. olds What: Ancient Greek Theatre
(With guest instructor Gail Whiteford)
