The Shaw Festival: Neil Munro Intern Directors Project

Applications are now open for the 2014 Neil Munro Intern Directors Project at the Shaw Festival. Each season, the Shaw Festival hires two Intern Directors. They look for promising professional directors at a point in their career where an extended residency with a company like the Shaw Festival will be of benefit to their professional development. Applicants should have a good amount of professional experience but will not have had an opportunity to work on the scale of production that is characteristic of the Shaw Festival.
Since its inception in 1988, the project has been sponsored annually by Sun Life Financial and Theatre Ontario.
The application deadline is June 28 at 5pm.

Job Position
You are an experienced public programmer who is passionate about connecting people with new experiences, new ideas and new skills, through programs, workshops, activities and events. A skilled communicator and networker, you dream of making a difference in the lives of people of all ages. A tinkerer and experimenter yourself, you know how to use physical and digital tools to engage people and encourage experimentation and innovation. You’re versatile, able to develop programs with themes relating to science, technology, engineering, arts and math. When it comes to developing programs, you’re not afraid to take a risk and try something new. A strong collaborator, you excel at working with different people and departments to deliver inspiring and compelling programs. This position reports to the Supervisor, Programs.
Responsibilities
Developing, pilot testing, and documenting wide-ranging program ideas and formats
Training staff and volunteers to implement these programs
Developing and leading special events
Ordering and purchasing supplies for programs and events
Tracking program budgets
Building and strengthening positive relationships with community partners
Working collaboratively with other Programmers, Program Leaders and Exhibit Developers to research, develop, pilot test and evaluate new experiences
Participating in regular skill development workshops and professional development as a member of our learning organization
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree (graduate degree an asset)
3 years of experience developing and implementing public programs
A strong understanding of inquiry-based learning and its application in science, technology, and the arts
Previous event planning experience
Detail oriented, and able to meet deadlines
Ability to thrive in an experimental, risk-taking environment
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external partners
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Previous experience developing and implementing digital and electronic experiences for visitors of varying ages and abilities an asset
Budget tracking experience an asset
Previous experience working in a science centre and/or museum environment an asset
Must be willing to work evenings, weekend and holiday shifts
A Police Information Check will be required
First Aid Training and CPR certification or willingness to be trained

You are an astronomer with a strong track record in public education and outreach. You’re passionate about connecting people with new experiences, new ideas and new skills, through programs, workshops, activities and events. A communicator, innovator, and networker, you dream of making a difference in the lives of people of all ages. You’re excited by the challenge of developing awe-inspiring astronomy shows for TELUS Spark’s digital planetarium. You’re also versatile, able to develop programs with other themes relating to science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). A strong collaborator, you excel at working with different people and departments to deliver inspiring and compelling programs. This position reports to the Supervisor, Programs.
Responsibilities
Researching, developing, implementing and evaluating astronomy shows in the digital dome theatre
Developing new public programs themed around science, technology, engineering, arts and math, in collaboration with the content group, and with external partners
Documenting program development processes and outcomes
Tracking program budgets
Developing and delivering astronomy training for the TELUS Spark facilitators
Acting as the go-to resource person for astronomy media inquiries, and representing TELUS Spark in the media
Developing and leading special events
Building and strengthening positive relationships with community partners
Keeping the facilitation staff current with astronomy events, and up to date on seasonal changes in the night sky
Participating in regular skill development workshops and professional development as a member of our learning organization
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in astronomy, or related discipline
A minimum of 1 year of experience developing public programs
A strong understanding of inquiry-based learning and its application in science, technology, and the arts
Previous digital dome scripting and/or computer programming experience
Detail oriented, and able to meet deadlines
Ability to thrive in an experimental, risk-taking environment
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including with external partners
Strong written and verbal communication skills

Studio 35's Photo Retoucher & Associate Photographer plays a key role in the operation of this busy studio. You are passionate about bringing out the best in photographs through your expert level knowledge of Adobe Photoshop (and related software). You are also a competent photographer in your own right with the skills and personality to cover high pressure assignments including weddings, commercial projects and even boudoir and glamour shoots. You are prepared to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the Studio's reputation continues to grow. The Photo Retoucher & Associate Photographer will also be responsible for:
Assisting with the general administration of the studio, keeping the sets clean and tidy.
Cataloguing digital files and retouching photos including image manipulation and enhancements.
Creating and preparing prints, photo albums and other products
Act as a Second Photographer and/or Videographer when required
Act as a Primary Photographer when required
Helping maintain records of files, exposures, lighting set-ups, as well as the names and details of clients, art directors, models, stylists, etc.
Provide superior customer service
Conduct technical ‘recces' (reconnaissance) and assessments of shoot locations, checking for vehicle access, power and communications facilities.
When required, organise transportation, catering and accommodation, set up equipment, and source a local laboratory or reliable courier.
Travel, sometimes with very short notice, in advance of or with the production team when required. A valid passport and the ability to leave Canada / enter other countries is recommended.
Lead the studio's blogging and social media efforts
Prepare and review presentations
Present a positive and professional image to all visitors, suppliers, inquiries, and other persons
Provide limited support to other staff members as projects require
Perform such other tasks, duties and responsibilities as the Company may request from time to time.
Qualifications
Post Secondary Degree in a directly related field. We are seeking a recent graduate or soon to graduate candidate
Expert level proficiency with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop
Proficient with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge, CaptureOne and plugins
Competent, professional level photographer
Sales and/or customer service experience
Working knowledge of DSLR's, lenses, studio lighting and natural lighting principles
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Professional and polite
Enthusiastic team player who shows initiative
Other Requirements
The successful candidate must have access to reliable transportation
This position will require the successful candidate to cease operations of activities deemed to be a conflict of interest.

The New Gallery: JSH Program Assistant

John Snow House Program Assistant

The New Gallery (TNG) is seeking applications for a Program Assistant to work at the John Snow House (JSH). Established as an auxiliary space of TNG in 2008, JSH has a rich history as a space of community engagement in the City of Calgary. Named for its most famous resident, print-maker, banker and community leader, John Snow, the house is currently home to TNG’s support programming, including: a live-in artist-in-residence (AiR) program, resource center, letter press facility and community partner projects.
The role of the Program Assistant is to further develop these programs, and while the successful candidate will be involved in a range of work and research at JSH, their primary responsibilities will be set in the facilitation of our AiR program and its related activities. The successful candidate will be working under the direction of the John Snow House Director. Training specific to the role and JSH will be provided.
Qualifications
Candidates should be individuals with a keen interest and desire for experience in the development of public projects geared towards the support of research and production in contemporary art practices. The ideal applicant will be enrolled in an educational program focused on or related to the study of Studio Arts, Art History, Art Education, Curatorial Studies or the equivalent, and will have experience in assisting and facilitating the projects of others, in addition to their own.
Candidates must be comfortable working with a Mac operating system and familiar with Microsoft programs (particularly, Word and Excel), the Adobe Creative Suite, website maintenance, and social media. The successful applicant will be highly organized and self-motivated, and will have extensive experience working with the public in a variety of capacities.
Basic responsibilities include:
- Research to support the development of the AiR program (to be collected for future use)
- Developing existing and new relationships, sponsorships, and partnerships in the Calgary community in support of the AiR program
- Creating documentation of all work undertaken to update relevant sections of the Procedure Manual for future organization use and in a personal journal format for student’s reflection and personal use
- Facilitation and support of the AiR’s work and programs
- In conjunction with the resident artist and John Snow House Director, develop and deliver a public program to take place during the AiR, i.e. open studio, workshop, lecture, etc.
- The maintenance of the John Snow House facility in support of the AiR program, and with the support of the John Snow House Director
- Promotion of JSH activities and programs i.e. social media

The Opportunity
This role is a one year maternity leave relief position reporting to the Vice President Access, Collections and Exhibits. The New Gallery (TNG), a pioneering not-for-profit centre for contemporary art in Calgary, is seeking applications for a Gallery Assistant. At TNG, we strive to provide opportunities and venues for artists that foster social, political and critical creative practices, while engaging and educating our local, national, and international communities on contemporary art.
The role of the Gallery Assistant is to support the Gallery staff in the various facets of the Gallery’s operations. The Gallery Assistant will be working under the direction of the Administrative Director. Training specific to the role and Gallery will be provided.
Qualifications
