If the term ‘lowbrow’ comes up in conversation when talking about art, it often seems like a put down of artistic merit and technique. ‘Lowbrow art, which is also sometimes referred to as ‘Pop Surrealism’, is so called as a satirical criticism of what the mainstream art culture call ‘Highbrow’. What highbrow lacks is work inspired by illustration, comic books, animation, tattooing, street art and graffiti.

Within one year, LowBrow has become recognized as a major art form in the City of Calgary. Being the cultural capital of the country, Calgary is seeing new artists fledging to the city everyday, and with that comes more talent within the realm of LowBrow. This is an opportunity for un-represented artists to show their work in an encouraging and supportive environment.
Last years LowBrow Art Show saw terrific support from the community, and received one of Fast Forward Weekly’s 2011 Critics Favorites for Art Shows. The exhibit gained mass amounts of attention, and our goal is to make this years show even bigger and better.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Artists at any stage of their career are welcome to apply. Works will be chosen by the jury on quality and artistic merit.

All works submitted MUST be in a professional state and gallery ready.
i.e.; Wired to hang/framed 2D work.

Each artist may submit up to 3 images in PDF or JPEG format. Only one out of the three pieces submitted may be chosen by the jury to be displayed.

On a separate word document the following information MUST be included: Artist name, Title of work, Medium, Dimensions and Price of all pieces submitted. Image titles should correspond correctly with images sent.

Curriculum Vitae must be included in submission (CV should have a maximum of 3 pages).

Please send all submissions to lizzie.carr@hotmail.com with ‘LowBrow Art Show 2012’ in the subject line. Any email that does not have ‘LowBrow Art Show 2012’ in the subject line will be overlooked.

Successful applicants will be notified via email. A $15 exhibition fee will apply and is payable when work is delivered.

Regular gallery commission applies (60% artist/40% gallery).

SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH @ 6PM.
LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

October 15th-November 3rd-Show Duration
November 4th-Artists who had sales will be notified.
November 5th-7th-Pick work up from gallery.

Opening reception yet to be determined.
