In May of 2012, Calgary Arts Development embarked on a yearlong process to create a comprehensive strategy for arts development and investment in Calgary. The Arts Plan process was made possible through funding from Calgary 2012 and will be a major legacy of Calgary's year as a Cultural Capital of Canada.
In Phase III, we will be convening a series of summits in early 2013 that will bring together experts and practitioners in the city’s arts sector to craft informed and visionary targets and strategies for the arts. Three delegate sessions will take place:
- January 26, 2013 from 9am - 3pm at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus Event Centre (906 8th Ave. SW)
- February 21, 2013 from 2pm - 8pm at the BMO Centre (1410 Olympic Way SE)
- March 23, 2013 from 9am - 3pm at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus Event Centre (906 8th Ave. SW)
Our goal is to work with delegates to build a unified vision with clear goals, plans and collective action. Rest assured, this is not “another consultation.” These will be working sessions to draft the core of the final document. We aim to create something that inspires the community to come together with one voice on June 5, 2013 at a public meeting of The City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Community and Protective Services.
Public participation is crucial to the creation of Calgary’s first comprehensive Arts Plan. There has never been a better opportunity to articulate and realize an ambitious vision for the future of the arts in Calgary.
Capacity for these sessions is limited. Delegates will be selected on the basis of their expertise and their expected contributions to the process. We will also work to ensure that a diversity of voices and experience is represented in the Phase III process. To apply to participate, please fill out the form below by January 14, 2013. Applicants should commit to attending all three sessions if possible. Successful applicants will be notified by January 16, 2013.

Calgary Arts Development Authority (CADA) and The Office of the Mayor are collaborating to launch the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions on February 21, 2013. With Calgary’s year as Cultural Capital of Canada coming to a close in March 2013, the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions will galvanize attendees to continue to make Calgary a better city by supporting a successful arts sector.

The occasion will also announce the first recipients of the Cultural Leaders Legacy Awards. A legacy initiative spearheaded by Calgary 2012, the awards are $5000 cash prizes that support artists or arts organizations in the following categories:
- Calgary Catholic Immigration Society New Canadian Artist Award
- SANDSTONE City Builder Award
- Enbridge Emerging Artist Award
- MacLachlan Family Community Beacon Award
Each Legacy Award is funded by a $10,000 donation from a local philanthropist or organization with equal matching money from Calgary 2012, and will be awarded annually for four years with winners determined by a jury of peers. Doug and Lois Mitchell, co-chairs of Calgary 2012, will also be funding a Legacy Award.
The luncheon will feature keynote speaker John Michael Schert, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Trey McIntyre Project, internationally renowned dance company from Boise, Idaho. As both an arts organization and a city-builder, the Trey McIntyre Project steps off the stage for several weeks each year to engage citizens in schools, hospitals, public places and businesses to foster a sense of community ownership. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet and speak with some of Calgary’s top creative dynamos, who will be seated at each table to act as catalysts for discussion and action.
“Calgary has tremendous momentum right now, and our dynamic arts scene and the artists who call this place home are a crucial part of this city’s energy,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “This is our chance to come together as current and potential arts champions to invest in an aspect of this city that is truly amazing.”
“We are inviting Calgarians to the table with cultural movers and shakers to keep building this momentum,” adds Terry Rock, President & CEO of Calgary Arts Development. “This event promises to reinvent the term ‘power lunch,’ and the result will be an even stronger commitment to Calgary’s arts scene.”

Citizen input is key to the process, which involves consulting arts sector professionals and anyone who calls this city home. As we move into the final phase of the process, we encourage all Calgarians to take an active role in the creation of the Plan by joining the conversation.
Phase II of the Arts Plan process involved a rigorous public consultation overseen by MASS LBP, with 36 randomly selected Calgarians making up a Citizens’ Reference Panel. This panel produced a report containing 35 recommendations for the arts in Calgary. We invite you to read and comment on those recommendations, as well as on the panel’s seven vision statements.
The upcoming Phase III will engage experts and practitioners in the city’s arts sector to craft informed and visionary targets and strategies for the arts, using the Citizens’ Reference Panel’s report as a guide. More about Phase III

CSIP is a capital project evaluation process established by Calgary Arts Development Authority (CADA) to inform City Council and the municipality of priorities for community-led, cultural infrastructure projects. Formerly the Arts Space Investment Process (ASIP), CSIP has been revised to accommodate facility proposals at an advanced stage of readiness that enable a broad range of arts, culture and heritage activity throughout the city.
