Call for Submissions: The Visual Arts Studio Association of St. Albert (VASA)
- Posted by MConstable on April 30th, 2013
VASA is soliciting submissions for visual art exhibitions for the 2014 calendar year from professional and emerging artists in Alberta. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2013.
VASA follows the concept of visual fine art as defined by the Canada Council for Arts that could include the following mediums: drawings, hand pulled prints, paintings in any medium, free standing or hanging sculpture in any medium, assemblage pieces, photography, and textiles.
Selection of art work will be based solely on the content and quality of the submission. VASA may place more than one artist’s work together for a show to fill the display space. VASA will try to place work of a similar nature together.
Submission Guidelines
VASA accepts only emailed electronic submissions.
• Email all submissions to submissions@vasa.ca. Please indicate in the subject line if your submission requires you to send more than one email (ie: Submission for VASA 1 of 2).
• Images must be in a .jpg format and attached to the submission email.
• Each image is not to exceed 1 Mb in size.
• Images must not be embedded in a document.
• Do not submit a website address or slideshow presentation in lieu of image files.
• Documents must be in Word format only.
The submission must include:
• A curriculum vitae,
• A short biography,
• An artist’s statement for the proposed show,
• Up to 10 images of representative pieces of art work,
• A list of the included images to be considered, including the year created, unframed size, medium, and price,
• An indication of how many other similar pieces are available for a show.
Documents must be in Word format only. Images must be in a .jpg format and attached to the submission email. They must not be embedded in a document. Each image is not to exceed 1 Mb in size.
The VASA Main Space Gallery provides over 1100 square feet of display space. It can hold up to 24 large size paintings, and up to 40 mixed size pieces. However, if you are interested in submitting but are worried that you can’t fill the space, VASA will try to group similar works from different artists into one show.
The VASA exhibition space is unique; it is surrounded by artist’s studios that are open to visitors 5 days a week. The studios are open during all shows in the Main Space Gallery. All shows run for approximately one calendar month.
Submissions from groups of artists are welcomed; a group submission must include documentation and images from all artists in the group. VASA recommends that artists involved in a group submission also submit as single artists. Selected single artists may be included in grouped exhibitions by VASA.
VASA may request a studio visit to view the artist’s collection and the selected artists should view the space prior to delivery of art works.
Submissions will be evaluated by a jury selected from VASA members and the arts community. Jury selections are final.
Submissions that are not selected will be deleted from the VASA server.
Submissions that are accepted will be retained for up to 1 year after the show.
All pieces must be ready to display with hanging or support systems installed. VASA cannot handle large (over 4 ft high) or heavy (over 40 kg) sculptures.
The artist is responsible for delivery of all art pieces to VASA in St. Albert, Alberta and for prompt pickup of all pieces as VASA does not have room for storage of art work.

Ledge Gallery/Window Galleries
Deadline: All submissions must arrive by 4 pm on Monday, April 8. 2013
All applicants are strongly encouraged to view the space that they are applying for before submitting their proposal. These are not typical white box gallery spaces.
EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts is announcing a call for submissions of visual art from Calgary and surrounding area artists and art collectives (please note that we do not offer subsistence for shipping or travel at this time) for the following spaces:
The LEDGE GALLERY: 2013-2014 Programming
This unique space is located in the +15 pedway system and overlooks Centre Court from the second floor of the Centre. The gallery has windows on two sides, a cement floor and track lighting.
The LEDGE is most conducive to sculpture, installation and performative pieces – please note that the work is viewed from outside of the windows looking in unless the artist is present (performative piece). Exhibitions in this location will run for three month intervals unless a shorter time is negotiated for a performative piece. CARFAC artist fees are paid for this location. Please note that all artist fees are contingent on current levels of funding.
Area Specifications:
There are two power outlets. The longest length of the space is 24 ft 11 inches (connects both spaces), the shortest length is 10 ft 6 inches (the space is constructed into two boxes that are connected to create one space, the second box is 13 ft 10 inches). There is also a balcony space that overlooks the downstairs hall near Arts Learning. Artists are responsible for providing any required items not already in the gallery space to successfully exhibit their work.
Exhibitions will be promoted through digital media (email and the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts website).
WINDOW GALLERIES: 2013-2014 Programming
These seven window spaces are located across from the Max Bell Theatre. Four of the windows are conducive to sculptural/installation work, three of the windows are more suited to 2D artwork (drawing, painting, photography etc.). Each window is painted theatre black; all have differing measurements, with some equipped with lighting and power sources. Exhibitions will run in three month intervals. Artist honorariums are paid for the Window Galleries. Please note that all artist fees and honorariums are contingent on current levels of funding. Due to the location of the 7 window galleries, opening and closing exhibition receptions are not held for this programming.
Exhibitions will be promoted through digital media (email and the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts website). To view current programming please visit our Visual Arts and Media page and scroll down.
Please note that both the LEDGE and the Window Galleries are located in high traffic areas. Members of the public from all age groups and backgrounds will be viewing the artwork.

Call for Submissions: Invisible
- Posted by h.m.s on March 18th, 2013
CALL FOR ARTISTS
We increase our resilience by sharing our story and creating change. That’s the goal of the show “Invisible”. “Invisible” is a dance show telling the stories of women who feel invisible, vulnerable and shamed. On the one hand you see the woman who learns her shame from culture - teaching her what is acceptable and what is not. Ashamed of her increasingly aging body in a world of botox and grey-free hair, she slowly feels she sinks into the wall, ignored and overlooked by society ... The woman with a mass-load of debt trying to keep up to the standards of her wealthy friends ... The margarita mom who drinks to numb the days of being home with children, mourning the loss of what “she used to be” ... The teenage girl finding her acceptance in one night stands only to be left alone the next day ...
On the other hand, there is the woman who chooses to be invisible to the world. She is fleeing domestic violence, she sells her body to feed her children, she is the woman hiding in the washroom, hunched over a toilet as she tries to throw up her last meal, she is the woman who hurts herself for the great shame she carries.
These women are tired of living afraid, buried under a mountain of shame and feelings of hopelessness. Exhausted, they struggle to continue to do this alone. These women cry out, “Is anybody out there?”, “Does anyone understand?”, “Am I alone?”.
However, shame only has power when we feel we are alone.
Through hip hop elements, contemporary dance and film, the show "Invisible" highlights, that although these issues seem individual in nature, they are actually a society plague; a crisis that can be overcome with courage, empathy and compassion.
In the show, real-life stories of courageous women will be told, depicting each vulnerable journey. It’s a call out to emerge from the invisible and let yourself be seen. Once we do that, our eyes can be open to the needs around us.
We believe that some of the most powerful words one can hear are, “You are not alone”, and that when we tell our stories, we create resilience and change the world around us.
As a creative team, we are impassioned to draw attention to and raise awareness of these issues that can render women emotionally stunted with a sense of hopelessness. "Invisible" dares to delve into the darkest places of tortured experience to provoke thought and compassion in such desperate circumstances.
