Call for Submissions: Anne Green Award

WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival is inviting submissions for the inaugural Anne Green Award. The $3,000 award will be given to an artist whose project explores and challenges the traditional form of story and narrative and culminates in a presentation of the work at the 17th annual WordFest held in Calgary and Banff from October 9–14, 2012. The recipient will also be invited to Calgary as a festival artist, receiving airfare and accommodation. The award is open to artists whose primary discipline is based in the written and spoken word. Artists whose work is based in other disciplines must demonstrate that their body of work has previously explored and incorporated the practice of the written or spoken word.

The award is named for Anne Green, Founding Director of WordFest and long-time professional in the Canadian arts community. During the 15th anniversary of WordFest the establishment of the fund was enabled by a private donor to recognize the incredible contribution of departing Founding Director Anne Green and to facilitate WordFest continuing Green’s commitment to profiling innovative work that challenges genres and narrative forms.

The award recipient will be selected by Green and a committee of artistic peers which hopes to receive a wide range of submissions in varying formats and languages. Interested parties are directed to wordfest.com for more information on eligibility and submission requirements.

WordFest brings more than 70 artists from around the world to connect with readers in Calgary, Banff and the Bow Valley from October 9-14, 2012, in over 60 events that are intimate, interactive and fun. For more information, please call 403.237.9068 or visit wordfest.com.

Call for Submissions: EMMEDIA 2012/2013 Programming Year of Light

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: EMMEDIA’s 2012/2013 programming year
Deadline: April 30, 2012
Theme: Light
Program year runs from: September 1, 2012 – August 31, 2013

About EMMEDIA:

EMMEDIA is an artist-run centre that focuses on the production and presentation of media arts. EMMEDIA defines the “media arts” as the use of electronic media in artistic, educational and community contexts where the author/director retains creative control and copyright. Our commitment to the media arts crosses a range of media and disciplines: audio, video, web-based art, independent film, animation, multimedia, performance and environments.

EMMEDIA welcomes proposals for new or recent work by artists dealing with media art. To gain a greater understanding of the gallery and programming, please review our past exhibitions on our website www.emmedia.ca.

EMMEDIA facilitates exhibitions and projects in our screening room/presentation space, but also encourages submissions for offsite projects by artists whose work is not easily presented within our space. Our current space is a black box room with the dimensions of 29’ x 20.5’ x 9.5’ ( L x W x H ) . It is equipped with a screen, 5.1 surround sound system, and a 1080p HD VGA projector. Go to www.emmedia.ca for photos of the space.

EMMEDIA’s programming committee selects proposals through a peer review process and is based on the artistic merit of the project, relevance to EMMEDIA’s mandate and programming theme, feasibility of the proposed budget, and the ability of EMMEDIA to provide appropriate space and/or support for the project.

EMMEDIA is committed to paying CARFAC or IMAA fees.

About the theme, Light:

“No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door: the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people's eyes, to reveal the marvels around.” - Paulo Coelho

In response to apocalyptic ideas associated with the year 2012, EMMEDIA has decided to focus on a more positive perspective with the programming theme Light. The year of Light will illuminate the media arts through exhibitions and events, “bringing to light” the many possibilities and opportunities the media arts provide.

2012 will also mark the premiere of EMMEDIA’s media arts festival, an event that will celebrate innovation and creativity in our community. This is our chance to ignite interest and cast light upon an art form that is still new to many.

*****

Also known as radiant or luminous energy, light can be defined as electromagnetic radiation to which the organs of sight react, ranging in wavelength from 400 – 700 nanometres, and propagated at a speed of 299 972 kilometres per second.

But ideas of light permeate diverse aspects of language and culture. To light upon something is to discover it by accident or chance, while enlightenment and illumination express states of spiritual awareness. Light has the ability to change perception both literally and metaphorically, when we look at things in a different light. We say that a smile lights a person’s face, or that we can see the light in their eyes. We can make light of it, lighten the mood or light out of a bad situation. To light is also to start something – to ignite.

EMMEDIA welcomes proposals connected to any aspect or interpretation of light.
