EPCOR CENTRE PRESENTS: Poetry Floats - a workshop with Kris Demeanor
Date: Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Time: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
Reception: All participants of the Poetry Floats workshop are invited to attend the Papergirl reception on August 14 from 6pm – 8pm.
Location: EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts in the Arts Learning Centre (main floor of Centre Court). Afternoon on Olympic Plaza.
Cost: FREE but registration is required. Interested participants please email tmcgrath@epcorcentre.org by August 9, 2013. Include your first and last name, telephone number and email address. To ensure that as many people as possible can participate, registrants are asked to provide 48 hours’ notice to cancel their participation so that if anyone is on the waiting list they can be added to the class. Enrollment is limited. Note: Class is geared towards adult participants, please email with inquiries.
Workshop information: Poetry is like an octopus, or Medusa, or an umbrella! It is creative language that speaks to the universal, the personal, and the imaginative, and it can come in many forms. In this workshop, explore poetry in classic poem form, rhythmic spoken word (Slam!), song lyric and storytelling. Discover the differences in the ways these form are crafted and performed, and which style best suits you in expressing your joy, your rage, your fascination.
The goal will be to write a piece as a group and perform it, and if there’s time, give each participant a chance to write a personal poem or song. We’ll start off by Kris Demeanor giving examples of his own work, talking about how he approaches writing, and sharing tricks of the trade for novices and intermediate writers alike. We will get as weird, wild, earnest, descriptive, and hilarious as we can in our time together.
Participants will be invited to write their poems on waterproof paper and create paper boats. The boats will be released onto the water in Olympic plaza and the public is invited to take the boats with them.

The Poetry Floats project was initiated by Alberta College of Art + Design practicum student Christina Mayder.
Kris Demeanor Bio
Calgary songwriter Kris Demeanor delights in exposing the underbelly of western Canadian culture- gambling, drug use, murder, religion, the suburbs. His work explore the darkness and absurdity of these corners of Alberta life, offering songs, poems, and stories for audiences who like to think, laugh, weep, dance and party.
Kris has been increasingly active in the theatre, spoken word, and literary scenes in Calgary and around the country. Career highlights include taking the award winning short film based on his song ‘I Have Seen the Future’ to the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, collaborating with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on the 2011 event ‘Acres of Dreams’, and sharing a beer with David Byrne.
Kris is the first Poet Laureate of the City of Calgary.

Depending on your place of study, or if you’ve just jumped into the arts, your templates can be all over the place. Come down for an intro of what people are looking for from a theatre resume. Bring a copy of your resume for our panelists to review and get some tips on how you can make yours stronger and easier to read.

Masks are curious, physical, impulsive and raw. They will lead an artist into a surprising and playful world full of wonder. The versatility of mask is an essential foundation for actor training. It is invaluable in the practice of devising for performance. With a diverse array of characters born, artists can delve into creating accessible, engaging physical storytelling theatre.
This workshop will help the artist develop the fundamental skills of mask performance. Artists will focus on coming back to the basics of movement, voice, storytelling and improvisation in order to be able to listen truthfully to what’s really happening.
Nicola Elson is an actor, creator and educator with over a decade of experience working across Canada, England and Italy. Her love for all things theatre has inspired a diverse career, ranging from acting, devising theatre with an ensemble of artists, stilt walking, improvising and teaching. She currently teaches ‘Theatre for Young Audiences’ at the University of Calgary and is a returning instructor for Theatre Alberta’s ARTSTREK. Nicola is part of the DOWNSTAGE CREATION ENSEMBLE and is a well-known freelance actor in Calgary.

Building a Character Workshop with Chris Hunt
SYNOPSIS:
This workshop will focus on using given text to create believable and truthful characters. (detailed synopsis coming soon)
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Christopher Hunt is a Calgary-based actor, and a winner of five Betty Mitchell awards (honouring Calgary’s professional theatre artists) for his acting, most recently for Vertigo Theatre’s The 39 Steps. For over 25 years, he has performed for theatre companies large and small, in Calgary and across the country. He has toured shows to the U.K. with Ghost River Theatre and One Yellow Rabbit. Chris also received a Dora Mavor Moore theatre award nomination in Toronto for his performance in Two Weeks With The Queen (Young People’s Theatre). In addition to performing, Chris has taught acting for several years at a variety of institutions, including The Banff Centre, the University of Calgary’s Department of Drama and Theatre Alberta. He also occasionally works as a director, adjudicator and writer. He recently completed a four year term on the founding board of Calgary Arts Development Authority (CADA).

The Alberta Choral Federation is presenting a workshop led by Dr. Victoria Meredith on the adult singing voice. Dr. Meredith is the leading specialist in the field of ageing voice. Applying the principles that help maintain a healthy singing voice at any age, Dr. Victoria Meredith addresses challenges that singers tend to experience across time, as well as relationships between choral singing and various aspects of health. In this interactive session, participants will explore a wide range of vocal conditioning techniques that contribute to the preservation of the voice for a lifetime. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMER DRAMA/MUSICAL THEATRE CAMPS FOR AGES 6-16
WHO: Ages 6–12
WHAT: Adventures in the Wild Willows with Tanya Lukenoff
Imagine a peaceful Riverbank; a wild wood; and the animals that live there. Peaceful until Toad of Toad Hall leads the new band of friends on adventures which test and strengthen their friendships. Players will develop their character by exploring their body and voice and creating their own character mask. Players will then play with an adaptation of The Wind in the Willows and learn drama singing and dance skills to express the story, with confidence, on the last day of the camp.
WHEN: Mon. July 15 – Fri. July 19 OR Mon. July 22 – Fri. July 26
WHO: Ages 12-14
WHAT: Page to Stage with Kirk Miles
This Theatre camp involves players in the creative process of play-writing and script development. Players will develop the plot, craft the script, write dialogue, and hone their acting skills utilizing hands-on acting exercises, including improvisation and scenario work. Players will also learn a Hip Hop dance piece and share their own unique adaptation of The Wind in the Willows on the last day of camp.

WHAT: Pinocchio’s Puppet Show Adventures with Alicia Ward
Imagine the world of Pinocchio as a puppet show performer and his puppet friends who come to understand the importance of honesty and friendship. Players will develop their character through their body and voice and create their own character mask. Players will play with an adaptation of Pinocchio and learn drama, singing, and dance skills to express the story with confidence, on the last day of the camp.

WHO: Ages 13-16
WHAT: Androcles and the Lion with Tanya Lukenoff
Imagine Italy in the 1600’s, a zany world where masked characters were highly expressive. Shakespeare received many inspirations for his plays from this slapstick comedy, Commedia dell’Arte. Players will explore the stock characters, make their own mask and play with an adaptation of an Aesop Fable, “Androcles and the Lion”. Players will express this play within a play for the community, on the last day of the camp.
WHEN: Mon. Aug. 19 – Fri. Aug. 23 OR Mon. Aug. 26 – Fri. Aug. 30
TIME: All camps run from 9am-4pm and pre & post care is available
