Location: SpanicArts (604 1 St. SW)
Date: October 4, 2025
The Western Muslim Initiative (WMI) is proud to announce the return of the Muslim Art Movement, now in its 13th year. This interdisciplinary showcase will feature thought-provoking works by both emerging and established Muslim artists, exploring the 2025 theme: Between Prayer and Protest.
The exhibition invites audiences into a space where faith, identity, culture and activism meet. From traditional Islamic art to contemporary multimedia installations, the works selected reflect the depth and diversity of Muslim artistic expression today.
Categories include:
- Traditional Islamic — Representational art of religious texts, sites and themes
- Contemporary Islamic — Modern interpretations of Islamic themes using new mediums
- Cultural Islamic — Explorations of identity through history, storytelling and cultural practices
- Individual Identity — Personal narratives of migration, diaspora, sexuality and self-expression
- Social & Political — Works addressing colonialism, justice, activism, feminism and representation
This year’s event will take place at SpanicArts (604 1 Street SW, Calgary, AB). The evening will feature artist talks, live performances and opportunities for attendees to engage directly with the works and their creators.
The Muslim Art Movement has become a cornerstone of Calgary’s cultural calendar, offering a rare platform for Muslim artists to share stories that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. It continues to challenge perceptions, celebrate resilience, and champion the role of art in driving social change.
