Auditions: Fire Exit Theatre’s Gracie
Fire Exit Theatre
Fire Exit Theatre is seeking a performer for its March 2026 production of Gracie by Joan MacLeod, directed by Heather Pattingale.
Synopsis
Inspired by real life events, a young girl is born into a complex and secretive world: a polygamous and fundamentalist church community. Gracie’s days are full of faith and family but as a teenager, she faces the increasing pressure of religious tradition. Can she confront the uncomfortable reality of what their beliefs require her to sacrifice for the benefit of others? A gripping tender story about growing up and braving the crossing between the familiar and the unknown.
We are looking for three (3) members of an ensemble.
GRACIE: Female actor (18+) to play Gracie ages 8-15 as well as 14 other voiced characters of varying age and gender.
Gracie is both narrator and voiced character in this one-woman play. A loveable, precocious child who was born into a polygamous religious community and brought across the US border to Canada at the age of eight along with her mother and siblings. As a young girl Gracie energetically engages her world of faith and family with irrepressible curiosity, keen observation and lively imagination. On nearing the marriageable age of 16, the lightness and innocence with which she approaches life begin to give way to unease and foreboding as she faces increasing pressure to conform to her community’s expectations. After speaking her mind out of concern for others, Gracie finds herself cast out from her home and standing on the edge of a new life in the outside world.
