What is Fringe?

Fringes are uncensored, non-juried theatre festivals. The first Fringe started in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947, and has grown into one of the biggest arts festivals in the world. Showcasing a combination of local, national, and international productions, the Calgary Fringe presents 26 shows—for a total of over 160 performances over nine days! As a proud member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, 100% of ticket revenue is returned directly to the artists.

The Calgary Fringe acknowledges that we live, work, and create on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We are grateful for this land and its peoples that host our festival and its local and international artists. The Calgary Fringe festival celebrates and upholds the values of story-sharing, equity, and community in the spirit of reconciliation.
