Commercial Gallery + Research Assistant

Terms: 25 – 32 hours per week
Wage: $18 per hour
Newzones is hiring a post-secondary student for a work-integrated learning placement. The Student Work Placement (SWP) program supports partnerships between arts and culture employers and post-secondary education (PSE) institutions to create paid quality work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities for students so that they can develop the work-ready skills that are required to secure meaningful employment upon graduation. This position will formally integrate a student’s academic studies with quality experiences within a commercial gallery setting.
The student must:
- Be currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary education institution
- Be legally allowed to work in Canada according to the laws and regulations of Alberta, and
- Be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person granted refugee protection under the law
We are looking for a candidate who loves the visual arts, is organized, efficient and detail-oriented.
Successful candidates will:
- Have a driver’s license and clean driving record
- Have excellent written communication skills and ability to create professional content
- Demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Be capable of juggling a variety of projects
- Have knowledge of Adobe Suite + photography
- Demonstrate integrity: be focused on high quality outcomes
- Demonstrate discretion, tact, initiative and sound judgment skills
- Demonstrate formal artwork installation knowledge
- Be confident with use of power tools
Duties include but not limited to:
- Handling and unpacking artwork while ensuring the safety and security of artwork at all times
- Organization of Artist Estate, including inventory documentation and storage
- Assist gallery director with all aspects of day-to-day gallery practices, including administrative tasks
- Gaining comprehensive knowledge of gallery artists to interact with visitors
- Installation and deinstallation of artwork / handling of artwork
- Inventory control
- Daily maintenance of gallery: cleaning of surfaces, floors etc.
- Crating and packaging of artwork
This position is an entry level commercial gallery position which combines 40% administrative and 60% technical (physical) aspects of gallery life.
