Custom Picture Framing Basics

This workshop will take you through the basics of custom picture framing paper artwork. An excellent resource so that you can confidently get your artwork gallery-ready for shows or just hang your work up at home when you finish it. Learn the difference between what is archival and non-archival in picture framing. You will also learn various archival mounting techniques. The class will include learning to custom cut mats and you will go home with a fully fitted 8 x 10 picture frame.
The instructor will cover:
- The basic components of a custom-framed artwork on paper
- What’s archival, and what’s not, when it comes to custom framing
- Measuring and cutting a basic custom mat window using archival 4-ply mat board
- Archival mounting techniques (framing corners and t-hinges)
- Fully fitting an 8″x10″ frame with a 5″x7″ printed artwork to take home
- Sourcing supplies

Instructor Bio
Alison has over a decade of experience in archival custom picture framing. She holds a BFA from the University of Regina and an MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. Originally from the South Saskatchewan prairies, she currently lives in Calgary. She is involved in the art community, exhibiting her work, coordinating community exhibitions and events, teaching and volunteering. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia.
