TouchDesigner is one of the fastest growing and most powerful software tools for real-time video applications. Developed in Canada and used by video and New Media professionals around the globe, this dynamic tool can be used to create anything from custom VJ performances, to live camera systems for dance or theatre, gallery installations, and even mapping real-time election results on the side of the Empire State Building.

During this six week workshop, we will develop fundamental TouchDesigner skills while working towards individual projects that will be presented in TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary’s U-Hall space during the final class.  This workshop will guide participants through the process of realizing their projection projects from start to finish. Projection technology will be provided as well as guided instruction catered to developing and presenting your project.

No TouchDesigner experience required but familiarity with computers and digital video is considered an asset. Students will be required to bring their own laptop preloaded with Derivative TouchDesigner 099 (free download) and are encouraged to bring their own projects, questions, ideas, and technology.

Instructor Bio

Matthew Waddell is an audiovisual artist, multimedia programmer and educator. He has been involved with digital art production and education for the last eleven yearscreating 3D visual art, designing award-winning sound and video for theatre, programming innovative custom playback servers, and recently, exploring large-scale video installation and architectural projection mapping.

Since discovering TouchDesigner in 2014, Matthew has used it to create custom playback systems that combine live camera feeds, real-time graphics and animation, interactive controllers and video mapping technology.  His work made in TouchDesigner has been presented at Mutek Montreal, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Nuit Blanche Winnipeg, the Calgary GLOW Festival, Canada Day at the Forks Winnipeg, and on stage with Alberta Theatre Projects and Ghost River Theatre.

Over the last six years, he has taught courses in audiovisual technology at the National Theatre School of Canada, as well as at numerous workshops in Calgary, Montreal, Winnipeg and Bogota, Colombia. Matthew has received two Betty Mitchell Awards: Outstanding Projection Design (The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst, 2015) and Outstanding Sound Design (ONE, 2011), and a Calgary Critics Award for Best Technical Design (Tomorrow’s Child, 2014).

Having recently returned to Calgary after ten years living in Montreal, Matthew is excited to be back and working with new people in his hometown.
