About Lougheed House
Lougheed House was built in 1891 and is a Provincial and National Historic Site. Designed by Ottawa architect James R. Bowes for Senator James and Isabella Lougheed, it is one of the earliest surviving mansions of its kind on the Canadian prairies today. Located in the Beltline community of Calgary amid several acres of heritage gardens and green space, the House is also an accredited museum and significant Calgary landmark. It features a regular exhibition program, hosts events, tours, and provides learning opportunities for visitors of all ages.
The Opportunity
The Lougheed House Conservation Society is seeking an outgoing, knowledgeable and adaptable individual to be an events and visitor experience assistant for the Lougheed House National & Provincial Historic Site. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills as well as respect for, and the ability to work with, diverse populations.
The events and visitor experience assistant would work primarily under the senior specialist events and operations to cultivate a welcoming and respectful environment for all guests that come to Lougheed House.
Lougheed House hosts a series of different events ranging from weddings, corporate functions, holiday parties, and more. Event staff are essential in maintaining and preserving the values and quality of our museum as a venue. This role involves a variety of physical tasks that support the smooth operation of our events, including the setting up and taking down of chairs and tables.
The ideal candidate must be able to handle physically demanding tasks, including lifting objects up to 30 lbs and navigating stairs safely and efficiently, and may involve hours of standing at a time during your shift. The ideal candidate will also communicate with clients during events and perform tasks like welcoming guests, directing them to different areas of the venue, and adhering to venue safety standards.
Along with events, you will also be working the front desk of our museum as an admissions assistant. Providing an engaging and meaningful experience for visitors is key to their understanding and experience in the museum. With excellent customer service skills, you will greet and direct visitors of the museum, taking extra time to prioritize each visitor’s experience, and any questions they may have. You will also handle all admission purchases, tracking and any gift shop purchases.
Tasks include but are not limited to:
- Opening and closing facility following museum procedures.
- Providing base level technical support during events under guidance, including setting up and running onsite A/V equipment.
- Ensuring smooth communication between all staff during events and public programs.
- A variety of manual tasks including unloading, set-up, and tear-down of event equipment.
- Monitoring museum and exhibition spaces and recording any findings as necessary.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of museum spaces and event storage spaces as required.
- Upholding museum standards and historic guidelines during and after events.
- Completing suggested readings of exhibition panels and museum history to develop base knowledge to share with patrons.
- Adhering to event safety standards.
- Monitoring the front desk, gift shop, and Guest Services regularly to greet and provide information to visitors.
- Working with the computer and point-of-sale software to process admissions and giftshop transactions.
- Maintaining clean and organized front of house area, which includes the merchandising of our gift shop (dusting, restocking and rearranging of merchandise, etc.).
Qualifications:
- Interest in museums, local history, and/or architecture would be considered an asset
- Flexible work schedule
- Open weekend availability
- Able to work independently under general direction and comfortable working with a small team
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
- Comfortable with long periods of standing
- Willingness to learn and willingness to share your knowledge to help train others
- Experience operating A/V equipment such as microphones, mixers and speakers would be considered an asset
- Comfortable with frequent stair climbing and navigating multiple levels of our building
- Highly adaptable by being a keen problem solver and ready to take on new tasks
- Excellent customer service skills
- Experience using a point-of-sale system considered an asset
- Prior hospitality experience considered an asset
- Proserve considered an asset
- First-Aid Certification considered an asset
- Must be comfortable with engaging with a diverse range of visitors
- Applicable computer skills and experience with some administration preferred
