The Works International Visual Arts Society is a not-for-profit charitable organization that advances the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides artists, designers and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. The Works Art & Design Festival, entering its 40th year, is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world – boosting the city’s energy and imagination for 13 days each summer.

Description of Role

This full-time position is responsible for ensuring proper and efficient install, preparation and dismantle of various exhibits, installations, programs and special events.

Reporting directly to the executive artistic director, the exhibit production and technology supervisor will oversee:

  • Project management: Liaise with other departments and the executive artistic director to effectively plan, organize and implement project-based timelines and goals. Develop and maintain administrative resources such as schedules, progress reports, budgets and inventories. Oversee and participate hands-on in the construction, installation and dismantle of projects.
  • Health and safety: Research and enforce safety regulations and best practice across worksites. Prepare and deliver orientations to staff and volunteers regarding Occupational Health and Safety, communication and emergency preparedness and response.
  • Team management: Support the recruitment, hiring and onboarding of a team of 6-10 Exhibit Production and Technology interns each festival season. Oversee the team’s skill development, including preparation and delivery of training, lecture material, group discussions and evaluations. Create workplans and delegate to the team, balancing schedules to meet goals with respect for Alberta Labour Laws.
  • Financial responsibilities: Acquire materials and supplies as per budget guidelines and transport expenses to the executive artistic director.
  • Interaction with the public: Engage in communications with artists, arts organizations, venue personnel and patrons. Respond to any issues and represent The Works Society in a professional manner conveying the organization’s goals, objectives and mandate.
  • Resource management: Manage inventories, monitor and acquire resources. Assess, maintain and repair equipment and facilities as needed with input from the executive artistic director.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum two years of directly related work experience in event planning and management, program delivery, project management and/or festival production.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and supervise a team.
  • Proven ability to research and implement safe workplace procedures. Working familiarity with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation is an asset.
  • Previous experience in art handling and venue preparation is an asset.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Proven track record in effectively managing conflicting priorities, collaborating with others and exercising sound judgment within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Competent use of hand and power tools, including but not limited to drills, mitre saws, panel saws, circular saws and table saws.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.

Work Environment

The Works Office is located east of downtown Edmonton. The exhibit production & technology lead supervisor works across multiple indoor and outdoor sites as required. Intensity of work fluctuates seasonally, concentrated each spring/summer for the delivery of the festival. Evening and weekend work required as needed.

This is a physically demanding position that involves lifting loads of up to 50 lbs, holding hands overhead for extended periods of time, painting walls, climbing ladders, and climbing stairs to access exhibit spaces.

Benefits include flexible hours outside of summer peak, trainings and certifications as applicable to the work, and other professional development support.

Hourly Rate: $22 – 26/hour, commensurate with experience.

We’ve envisioned this role as a full-time hourly position; however it may be suitable for a qualified contractor or other work arrangement.
