Graphic Designer

Femme Wave is looking for a graphic designer to develop branding and core marketing materials for our 2020 festival.
The selected participant will have experience in both print and electronic media and will assist us in making Femme Wave’s visual identity consistent with our mission and values to create a supportive, inclusive, and fun festival this year and into the future.
Role Description
Working with the executive director and artistic director, the graphic designer will offer design concepts and be able to take direction from written or spoken ideas, converting them into images, layouts and other designs. The successful candidate should have a general understanding of how festival promotion and marketing campaigns work. Femme Wave operates at a fast pace, so the ideal graphic designer will be able to hit the ground running with support from our team. We are looking for an engaging and creative individual who can take direction as well as provide useful input in this process.
Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize visuals to unify festival marketing materials.
- Schedule projects and follow timelines.
- Prepare rough drafts and present ideas.
- Develop illustrations and other designs using software or by hand.
- Use the appropriate colours and layouts for each graphic.
- Work with executive director and artistic director to produce a final design.
- Test graphics across various media.
- Amend designs after feedback.
- Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing and on-brand.
Requirements:
- Evident elevated design skills.
- Drive and imagination to conceptualize an entire visual brand for the festival.
- Ability to work closely with our web developer to create a visually appealing web presence.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple timelines and priorities.
- Familiarity with Google Suite, particularly file sharing, considered an asset.
- Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from team members.
- Sensitivity and awareness to the diversity within Femme Wave, as well as to the Femme Wave audience.
- Consciousness of accessibility and inclusion in all graphical elements of Femme Wave’s public face.
- Experience with festivals, arts organizations, and/or non-profit organizations is an asset.
The graphic designer will work from June 1 to November 30, 2020. Time commitments will vary and increase in July-September when the festival promotion takes place but will average two to seven hours per week. Hours are flexible and will vary, with the majority of work being done remotely. Applications from outside Calgary are welcome. A small honorarium will be paid to the Graphic Designer upon successful completion of their duties.

Femme Wave is a feminist arts festival. The festival takes place annually in November across multiple inner-city venues and has enjoyed considerable growth since its inception. Founded in 2015, it is a collective-run organization with board and committee members of diverse and varying backgrounds.
