Full-Time Art Handler
Heffel, Canada’s national fine art auction house, is looking to fill a full-time art handler position in Heffel’s Calgary office. The position will be responsible for fine art shipping and installation, gallery logistics and related administrative support.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Fine art packing and shipping; following corporate policies and maintaining shipping records.
- Liaise and coordinate with third-party shipping companies for packing, crating and shipping services.
- Fine art exhibition preparation and gallery installation; using proper care and knowledge when handling artwork.
- Store artworks safely and manage inventory of artworks, both in upcoming sales, and from previous sales.
- Assist with framing, including frame repair, wiring, backing and hardware correction.
- Assist with artwork cataloguing and condition reports.
- Arrange third-party reframing and conservation when required.
- Maintain organization of artwork inventory in storage, ensuring clear labelling and record keeping.
- General gallery and office maintenance, including ordering supplies for wrapping, packing and shipping.
- Pick-up and delivery of artwork.
- Receive and unpack works as they are brought into the gallery.
- Provide administrative support to Heffel’s national team, including data entry and photo editing as needed.
Qualifications and Skills:
- The successful applicant must hold a valid Alberta driver’s license.
- Two+ years experience in a related field including experience handling cultural artifacts and artwork in a safe, respectful and archival manner.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field preferred, but not mandatory.
- An understanding of the practice and techniques used for handling, installing and shipping works of art.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team or individually in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Ability to work efficiently with goal of delivering high quality service to clients and colleagues.
- Ability to handle a variety of situations and deadlines in a positive professional manner.
- Carpentry skills an asset, but not mandatory
