Silent Sky
Fire Exit Theatre
Rehearsals begin: January 2025
Fire Exit Theatre is seeking actors for their May 2025 production of Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson.
A co-production with Ambrose University.
Synopsis
In the early 1900’s, Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory as one of the women ‘computers’ charting the cosmos. While measuring the light and distance of stars, Henrietta also takes measure of her own life, trying to balance scientific discovery with family obligations and the possibility of love. This true story of a trailblazing astronomer explores the passion and fortitude of females who defied social conventions and changed the way we understand both the heavens and the earth.
Directed by Karen Johnson-Diamond.
Schedule
Rehearsals will begin in earnest in early January 2025 and take place on evenings (Monday – Thursday) and a couple of weekends. There will be a break from January 30 – February 13, 2025.
Tech rehearsals are March 22 – 25, 2025, with performances running from March 26 – 30, 2025 at Engineered Air Theatre, Arts Commons.
How to prepare
Actors will also be sent a side from the play.
How to sign up
Auditions will take place at AMBROSE UNIVERSITY (150 Ambrose Circle SW) on Monday Nov. 25th from 6:30-9:30pm. Please schedule an audition time by emailing Val Lieske at val@fireexit.ca.
We will be auditioning for the following roles:
Peter Shaw: 30’s, male. Apprentice to Dr. Edward Pickering, Peter often visits Henrietta, Annie and Williamina, to “oversee” their work, although we soon find he has ulterior motives for doing so. Although a bit awkward, it is obvious that the scientist has feelings for Henrietta.
Willimina Fleming: In her 50’s and Scottish, Williamina is also Henrietta’s coworker. She was the first of Dr. Pickering’s “harem,” working as a human computer. Often cracking jokes and making fun of Peter’s crush on Henrietta, Williamina brings humor and levity to the play. The astronomer is also known for her discovery of the Horsehead Nebula.
Fire Exit Theatre is a non-equity semi-professional theatre company. Actor honorariums are paid.
