Technical Theatre Teacher (Grades 9 – 12)

Note: The hours for this position are outside the regular school day and could work well for someone already working elsewhere in Calgary.

Located in Calgary, Foundations for the Future Charter Academy (FFCA) is the largest public charter school in Alberta, serving more than 4,000 students across eight campuses throughout the city. We offer educational programming through a distinctive Direct Instruction Teaching and Learning Framework (DITLF) that has been refined and developed within the Alberta context for students from kindergarten to Grade 12. The following position will be open at the South High School Campus of FFCA to begin Aug. 18, 2026.

  • Subject: Technical Theatre (Grades 9 – 12)
  • Contract: 0.17 FTE
  • Requirement: An Alberta Education certified teacher is required.

The technical area of expertise is well supported at the school through other team members. We are looking for someone who has artistic skill sets for sets, props and design, and who can also oversee our board technicians.

Position Overview

FFCA South High School is seeking a dynamic, collaborative and student-centred educator to join our performing arts team. This role supports students in Grades 9 – 12 within a vibrant and highly respected program. Annual productions include a large-scale musical and one-act plays.

The technical theatre teacher will work closely with the director of performing arts to guide students in developing foundational skills in theatrical production, including lighting, sound, set design, costumes, props and backstage operations. Students will engage in hands-on, collaborative learning experiences that support creativity, communication and safe production practices.

Responsibilities

  • Competently plan for, provide and assess instruction to students.
  • Teach technical theatre courses (9, 15, 25, 35).
  • Lead and mentor approximately 30 students.
  • Guide students in set design, construction, painting and decoration.
  • Oversee props sourcing, creation and organization.
  • Coordinate costume organization and management.
  • Supervise lighting, sound, microphones, projections and backstage operations.
  • Serve as front of house (FOH) manager for the musical production (shared role).
  • Collaborate with the performing arts director, student leaders and volunteers.
  • Coordinate logistics including rentals, sourcing materials and transportation.
  • Maintain a safe, organized and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support positive classroom culture and student engagement.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in sharing roles and responsibilities and adapting to schedule changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal educator.

Time Commitment

The position totals approximately 174 hours, scheduled as follows:

September 28 – Feb. 11

  • Wednesdays: 3:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. (occasionally until 7 p.m.)
  • Select Fridays: 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

February 11

  • Theatre move-in (full day)

February 17 – March 3

  • Wednesdays: 3:45 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Three Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

March 5 – March 14 (Tech Week and Performances)

  • Evening and weekend commitments required.

Candidate Profile

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Experience in theatre production or technical theatre.

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in FFCA’s new staff orientation from August 10 – 14, 2026.
