What You Will Do at YMCA Calgary

The Theatre Technician is responsible for the safe and successful execution of productions and events, working collaboratively to ensure an excellent customer and client experience.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and operate house equipment (lighting, sound, AV, clearcom, and other gear) for productions and events (both in-house and rentals).
  • Ensure and/or undertake the safe and appropriate rigging of all equipment, including overhead gear (lighting, AV, sound, draperies, etc.).
  • Supervise and assist with load-in and strike as required.
  • Supervise events, ensuring clients, workers, volunteers, and patrons operate safely and appropriately according to health and safety, fire regulations, and other protocols.
  • Undertake the hanging, rigging, patching, testing, and focusing required for lighting, sound, AV, and other event needs.
  • Provide design input for the house hang and ensure/undertake restoration of the venue to the house hang position as required.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor problems that may arise during technical rehearsals, set-up, and performances.
  • Ensure the space and its equipment are treated safely and appropriately.
  • Effectively communicate in a variety of settings.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure optimal delivery of customer/client experience and consistency in programme offerings.
  • Be available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

What Qualifications We Are Looking For

At YMCA Calgary, we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will possess the following:

Experience and Skills

  • Experience working as a theatre technician and/or related education in the field.
  • Experience with programming and operation of lighting consoles (e.g., Element or similar).
  • Experience in live sound mixing.
  • Experience with digital sound processing and related equipment (e.g., Yamaha TF3 or similar) and analogue consoles (e.g., Soundcraft GB8 or similar).
  • Experience with AV equipment (e.g., Panasonic PTDz870 or similar).
  • Working knowledge of safe rigging practices.
  • Experience working with and running crews.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of Vectorworks and QLab is considered an asset.

Certifications and Requirements

  • Fall Protection certification (YMCA will provide training for recertification as needed).
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification, issued within the last 12 months by an approved AB OHS provider.
  • Asset: Certification issued by the Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St. John’s Ambulance, and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Evidence of a cleared police security clearance, including a Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Three professional references required.
