The Enbridge Famous 5 Speaker Series profiles extraordinarily successful women. Our speakers talk candidly about their careers, and the passion, vision and determination that drive them.

They discuss our place in our society and the ethical responsibilities and consequences of our actions. In relating their lives, you will hear about challenges as well as triumphs; humorous incidents and stories of loss; humbling moments of reflection and inspiring calls to action.

The Famous 5 Foundation’s Leadership Lunches were launched on October 18, 1996 to bring women together to plan the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Persons Case on October 18, 1999.  In 2004, Enbridge became our title sponsor. The Famous 5 Foundation is proud to continue to partner with Enbridge to present our 15th Annual Speaker Series featuring five dynamic and engaging women.

Karen A. Crowshoe was officially sworn in on April 13, 2018, as judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta, becoming the first Blackfoot woman to serve on the Provincial Court.

Judge Crowshoe is cognizant that her appointment brings more diversity to the judiciary and she is confident that her legal background, experience and strong ties to her community will help her serve all Albertans in a meaningful way.  She sees herself playing a role in any initiative that involves the judiciary moving towards restorative and reconciliation court processes involving Indigenous people.

With over 25 years of supply chain management roles based in global resource sectors, Siobhan has a strong understanding of leading change.

She has always connected to her passion for advancing gender equality through both her career and volunteer work having been on the boards of The Famous 5 Foundation, Women’s March Canada and many other initiatives focusing on equality and inclusion for all.

On the home front, Siobhan is loved and supported by husband, Scott, and their two amazing daughters, who both attend Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Geeta Sankappanavar is the Co-founder and President of Grafton Asset Management. Ms. Sankappanavar is responsible for strategy, oversight and execution of all Grafton’s business and operating units. Prior to co-founding Grafton Asset Management, Ms. Sankappanavar was at New Vernon Capital, a $3B blue-chip asset management firm focused on India and Emerging Markets.

Ms. Sankappanavar has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People, Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 and has been profiled as one of the top Women in IT.

In addition to her for-profit boards, she serves as a board member of UNICEF Canada, to help the world’s most vulnerable children, and the Palix Foundation supporting the Alberta Family Wellness initiative in the areas of early childhood development, addiction and mental health. Ms. Sankappanavar is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Colonel Krista Brodie is an Army Logistics officer with 30 years of leadership experience in diverse and challenging appointments in Canada and Internationally. She has deployed to floods, ice storms, forest fires and served in Croatia, Bosnia and Afghanistan.

Her focus in the past two years has shifted from strategic logistics to strategic leadership. Colonel Brodie has recently returned from Washington DC where she was on the faculty of the Strategic Leadership Department at the Eisenhower School of National Security and Resource Strategy, National Defence University. She currently works in Ottawa for the Chief of Military Personnel.

In 2013, Colonel Brodie was named to the WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 list.

She is married to Dr. Dennis Filips, a trauma surgeon, innovator and entrepreneur. They have three young children and a large shaggy dog.

Lara Murphy was only 16 when she started her first business, Handy Student Maintenance, in New Brunswick.

Over the years RMC Inc. has grown and its diverse portfolio includes working with companies such as the Sheraton, UNDRCARD, Telus Spark, Junction 9 Yoga, Village Ice Cream, TWT, Gravity Café and The Vin Room

The company has been recognized and featured in The Globe & Mail, PROFIT 500 (ranking #1 fastest growing YYC business in 2016), Canadian Business (Top 100), Chatelaine, Alberta Venture (Fast Growth 50) and MacLean’s Magazine.

Lara is the Director of Business Development for RMC Inc., and currently serves on the on the YWCA Board of Directors and several advisory committees.

On October 18, 2019, the Famous 5 Foundation will host an event to commemorate Persons Day and celebrate the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Persons Case. The victory was a pivotal moment in our history, championed by five courageous Alberta women who petitioned for the inclusion of women in the definition of the word persons—giving women the ability to own property and to be elected to public office.

Open to the public and free of charge, the Famous 5 Foundation will be set up by the Famous Five Monuments in Olympic Plaza. We will have performers and speakers celebrating with us.
