Archived April 11, 2018 Afro Urban Dance Workshops South African Grooves & Coupé-Décalé The date of this educational opportunity has passed. Woezo Africa Music & Dance Theatre presents Afro Urban Dance Workshops Vol 2: South African Grooves & Coupé-Décalé with Nyasha Nyamaka and Wunmi Idowu! Join us for our second workshop series highlighting some of Africa’s urban dance styles, this time led by two of Calgary’s own! South African Grooves with Nyasha Nyamaka Focusing on Kwaito, House and Gqom music, Nyasha will be teaching some of the vernacular moves and grooves associated with some of these well-known genres of South African music. The main focus of the workshop will be on the gqom-inspired bhenga style. Coupé-Décalé with Wunmi Idowu Coupé-Décalé is a mixture of Ivory Coast and Congolese dance moves. The dance engages your whole body and has a faster tempo than Congolese rumba songs. The dance tries to illustrate the song and the song usually expresses everyday activities, sometimes famous figures, or current events. We are excited to present these two styles to you and can’t wait for you to join us!
