Alternate Head of Stage

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced team player to fill the full-time position of alternate head of stage. Reporting to the production manager, the alternate head of stage is responsible for the efficient and safe running of the Jack Singer Concert Hall (JSCH) stage through all events and shows.

About Arts Commons

Arts Commons is a key contributor to the social, economic, cultural and intellectual life and well-being of the citizens of Calgary and is one of Canada’s largest and most vibrant arts centres. Located in the heart of Calgary’s cultural district in the downtown core, the centre occupies a full city block and is home to five theatres and the world-class Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Each year, the centre hosts over 1,800 performances and events, including live theatre, concerts, dance productions, readings, public forums, art exhibits, and much more. The resident companies of Arts Commons including Alberta Theatre Projects, Arts Commons Presents, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Downstage, One Yellow Rabbit, and Theatre Calgary create, perform, and present a wide range of award-winning and highly acclaimed theatre and concerts each season.

Arts Commons also houses rehearsal spaces, a costume and set construction shop, administrative offices, meeting rooms, a cafe, and the centralized Arts Commons box office.

Key Accountabilities

Client Service:

  • Liaison between the artists, artist’s management or promoter and backstage staff.
  • Liaison between backstage and FOH.
  • Help create the look and feel necessary for a successful show.
  • Coordinate dressing room assignments.
  • Masking, sightlines, review seat holds with FOH.
  • Shipping and receiving of rental equipment.
  • Ensure all union, and house working agreements are respected.

Scheduling and Supervising Crew:

  • Maintain a positive working environment for artists, stage crew and staff.
  • In conjunction with the head of stage schedule maintenance and administrative duties.
  • In consultation with the technical director determine crew call size and times.
  • Manage the production schedule during setups, rehearsals, shows and strike.
  • Ensure casual crew, are on time, have the appropriate tools and if are working the show, are properly attired.
  • Ensure all stage pre-show checks are completed and assist lighting and sound in pre-show checks as required.
  • In cooperation with FOH staff ensure that house opening, show starts, and intermission end are on time.
  • Complete and distribute show reports.
  • Supervises riggers/flymen, truck loaders, carpentry crew, maintenance crew, alternate carpenter when not acting as department head.
  • Ensure hall acoustic treatment is correct.
  • Operation of stage equipment as required.
  • Attend production and scheduling meetings as required.

Stage Safety:

  • Ensure a safe environment for the audience, performers and crew.
  • Ensure all fire, building and professional standards are adhered to.
  • Set up and installation of all scenic elements.
  • Responsible for the safe rigging of all flown equipment and scenery.
  • Liaison with facilities staff and security for staging requirements.
  • In cooperation with the building operators ensure that the hall atmospheric environment is stable and safe for instruments and patrons.
  • Installation and maintenance safety equipment.
  • Ensure first aid kits, backstage amenities are stocked and accessible.
  • Ensure stage and off-stage areas are clean and free of obstructions.
  • Promptly report any technical problems to the production manager or technical director.

Stage Maintenance:

  • Assist in planning, allocation and prioritization of stage carpentry budget.

Preventative maintenance, repair and oversight of the following areas:

  • Stage floor
  • Forestage elevators (non-mechanical aspects)
  • Choir stalls
  • Acoustic canopy (non-mechanical aspects)
  • Acoustic drapery
  • Acoustic banners (all aspects)
  • Stage draperies and masking
  • All removable audience seating
  • Trussing, point hoists and lift equipment (as appropriate—operational oversight versus inspections and certifications)
  • All rigging hardware
  • Arts Commons owned instruments
  • All carpentry tools and supplies
  • In cooperation with the building operators ensure that the hall atmospheric environment is stable and safe for instruments
  • Understage, backstage and storage areas

Fire Warden:

  • During the time that the audience is in the auditorium act as one of three fire wardens in any emergency situation
Requirements

Applicants should have a relevant diploma/degree from a recognized theatre school, with three to five years experience in areas including sound, lighting, carpentry, rigging and stage management.

Other desired skills and qualifications include:

• Experience in production including, preparing cost estimates, preparing schedules, and managing casual crews.
• Experience in classical music, rock and roll, dance, and theatre productions.
• Shall be computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Vectorworks.
• Stage management.
• All aspects of rigging including operation of chain hoists and winches.
• All aspects of stage carpentry including maintenance of stage machinery.
• Must be able to read technical, mechanical and theatrical drawings.
• Set up and maintenance of various musical instruments.
• Limited scenic and construction carpentry.

This position has an irregular 40-hour work-week with evening and weekend work, as based on a schedule of shows and events. A competitive compensation package, including extended health benefits, is offered.
