The Alberta Theatre Projects’ Student Writers Group is a unique opportunity for high school students to explore the craft of playwriting with professional playwrights and guest artists from across Canada. During this course (October 2022 through May 2023), students meet weekly with our playwright mentor to cultivate their playwriting skills, have conversations with guest artists (which can include members of our Playwrights Unit and current season artists) and build social connections with their peers. The students in the ATP Student Writers Group will be entitled to invitations to all of our performances in the 2022-23 season.
The program culminates in each of the students developing an original 10-minute play. Toward the completion of the program each student will be paired with professional directors/dramaturgs. They will participate in a dramaturgical mentorship session, followed by a workshop led by their director/dramaturg and some of Calgary’s finest actors. This process concludes in an annual online showcase of the students’ work in a professional online public staged reading produced by ATP and performed by some of Calgary’s beloved artists.
Who: Open to high school students ages 15-18. Students can participate multiple years in a row to continue honing their skills.
Dates: October 31, 2022 – May 15, 2023
Times: Monday evenings from 7 – 9pm
(No meetings on November 28, December 19, December 26, 2022, or January 2, February 20, March 27, or April 10, 2023)
Location: This program will be held at the ATP Office (220 – 9 Ave. SE).*
*Alberta Theatre Projects requires mask-wearing and proof of vaccination from all long-term guests.
Cost: $165 per student.
