Archived April 30, 2018 Education Assistant SummerACT Program We are seeking an enthusiastic summer student to fill the six week, full-time contract position of Education Assistant – SummerACT for the period of June 27 to August 8, 2018. SummerACT is a two-week musical theatre camp for ages seven to nine and 10 to 13 that teaches kids drama, vocal, dance, and visual arts skills in a fun, recreational summer camp setting and runs from July 9 to August 2, 2018. Reporting to the Education Associate, the Education Assistant – SummerACT is responsible for providing support to the Arts Education and Programming team during Arts Commons’ “SummerACT” arts camps, and assisting instructors and staff with the successful delivery of the SummerACT program. About Arts Commons Arts Commons is a key contributor to the social, economic, cultural and intellectual life and well-being of the citizens of Calgary and are one of Canada’s largest and most vibrant arts centres. Located in the heart of Calgary’s Cultural District in the downtown core, the centre occupies a full city block and is home to five theatres and the world-class Jack Singer Concert Hall. Each year, the centre hosts over 1,800 performances and events, including live theatre, concerts, dance productions, readings, public forums, art exhibits, and much more. The resident companies of Arts Commons including Alberta Theatre Projects, Arts Commons Presents, Calgary International Children’s Festival, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Downstage, One Yellow Rabbit, and Theatre Calgary create, perform, and present a wide range of award-winning and highly acclaimed theatre and concerts each season. Arts Commons also houses rehearsal spaces, a costume and set construction shop, administrative offices, meeting rooms, a café, and the centralized Arts Commons Box Office. Key Accountabilities: Assist in the preparation and coordination of Arts Commons’ SummerACT arts camps. This preparation includes: Pre-work for the camps. Coordination and preparation of the venues and materials. Assisting with the delivery of the program such as supervising campers during lunch hour. Providing pre/post camp care and lunchtime supervision for children aged seven to 13, and leading activities with participants during pre/post care and lunch. Supporting camp instructors with creating and producing a performance with the camp participants. Providing instruction in drama and dance, as needed in support of instructor’s lesson plans. Greeting participants and their caregivers to the organization in a professional and friendly manner and assisting with sign-in/out procedures. Applicants must currently be enrolled in a post-secondary institution in a performing art based program, taking courses in areas such as theatre, drama in education, education, arts learning, recreation and wellness, or fine arts—and returning to full-time studies in the fall. Experience in dance or musical theatre choreography is considered an asset. Other Skills and Qualifications Include: Excellent communication skills. One to two years experience working with children and youth. An expressed interest in working in a performing arts environment with children and teenagers. Must have valid first aid certificate and police check.
