Arts Spaces Engagement Assistant

Summer job opportunity for a returning student with a passion for helping find space for the arts in our communities. This is a limited term position of eight weeks within the time frame from June 18 to August 31, 2018. This position offers an opportunity to hone your outreach and engagement skills, network with space owner/operators and others, and deepen your understanding of the arts spaces ecosystem, particularly within diverse communities.

The Arts Spaces Engagement Assistant’s work focuses on SpaceFinder Alberta, an innovative free online tool that matches people who need space with organizations that have it. This position focuses on engagement and outreach, including active recruiting of spaces for SpaceFinder Alberta and hands-on support creating listings.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Planning and undertaking outreach and engagement, particularly within diverse communities.
  • Leveraging opportunities to engage with communities by attending workshops, festivals and events.
  • Working with the Arts Spaces team to follow up on potential space listings.
  • Supporting the Arts Spaces team in marketing SpaceFinder to Albertans.

Note: Some evening and weekend work is required.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking training on the SpaceFinder platform.
  • Working with the Arts Spaces team to update existing Calgary arts spaces database.
  • Providing updated Calgary arts spaces data for existing interactive map.
  • Contacting and meeting with operators of arts spaces.
  • Working with space operators to list their spaces of SpaceFinder Alberta.

The Arts Spaces Engagement Assistant will share a flexible work area in the Calgary Arts Development office. They will be trained by Arts Spaces project leaders and work with the project leaders and other members of the Calgary Arts Development team as required.

Preferred candidates:

  • Have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Have an interest in learning more about diverse communities and spaces in Calgary.
  • Are self-starters who can work independently.
  • Are good at scheduling, planning work, and meeting deadlines.
  • Have tenacity, patience, and enthusiasm.
  • Have excellent research skills.
  • Have affinity for data management, word processing and spreadsheet software programs.
  • Are detail-oriented.

Note: Some travel via transit within Calgary may be required.

This position is best suited to a student interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts, architecture, or arts administration. The student must be returning to school in Fall 2018. Experience in the arts and not-for-profit communities is considered an asset.

Term: Maximum of eight weeks between June 18 and August 31, 2018
Remuneration: $18.50/hour; 30-hour work week (office closed Fridays)
