Submit for auditions by January 28, 2019.

Playwright, Christopher Duthie, is seeking submissions from Calgary actors for an independent production of his new play, A Dinner Party, directed by Julie Orton in June 2019.

Audition Dates: Saturday, February 2 & Sunday, February 3, 2019

Synopsis of Play

When Boo, Darling, Baby and Sweetie are unable to agree on a common definition of Love, their otherwise normal dinner party spirals into absurd chaos of marriage proposals, identity crises, heartbreak, culinary emergency and polite cannibalism. Part absurdist meta-theatre, part heart-breaking cringe comedy, A Dinner Party asks how we know our individual selves and understand our Love for one another in the fragmented social landscape of the 21st Century.

A Dinner Party is written with un-gendered characters to encourage experimental approaches to casting and diversity of romantic relationships onstage. Characters will be gendered in production by the actors who play them. Actors of any gender are invited to submit for both parts. Artists of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to submit.

Roles Available:

Baby (late 20s/early 30s) open-hearted, life of the party, in the honeymoon period of new relationship with a younger partner (Sweetie)

Darling (late 20s/early 30s) serious cerebral literal-minded grad student in a long-term relationship, dinner party host

Sweetie (19-25) kind, loving and wise beyond his/her/their years, sensitive but confident

Note that all parts involve intimacy choreography with one or more performers. Baby appears fully nude onstage. Sweetie may appear nude onstage.

A Dinner Party is being produced with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the venue sponsorship of Vertigo Theatre.

The show will run from June 20 to 29, 2019 at the Vertigo Studio in Calgary.

Rehearsals will take place throughout May and June with a mix of part-time and full-time hours. Artists will be contracted under Canadian Actor’s Equity’s Indie 2.2 Policy.

Artist fees will be made up of a guaranteed weekly minimum and box office revenue sharing. Equity and non-equity artists will be considered. Calgary-based submissions will be given priority.

To submit, please send a resume and headshot to cpduthie@gmail.com by Monday, January 28, 2019.
