Fire Exit Theatre is accepting submissions for the 2021 production of Mary Jane by Amy Herzog.

Fire Exit Theatre is a semi-professional theatre company striving to produce excellent, innovative art that unlocks the soul of its audience while building a vibrant, meaningful community engaged in a dialogue about faith.

All actors receive an honorarium for their work. Artists from under-represented or marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Rehearsals: Saturday/Sundays January 11 – April 16, 2021 (mostly Zoom, not everyone will rehearse every weekend); Cohort Rehearsals run April 17 – 24 (in-person)
Tech: April 25 – 28, 2021
Run: April 28 – May 2, 2021 (six performances)

Submission Details

Please submit a self-taped audition. Self-tapes should include a slate (name, pronouns, equity status, the role you are auditioning for) and three to four-ish pages of any scene from the play Mary Jane by Amy Herzog. You may also include a 60-second contemporary monologue or song if you wish. Videos should not exceed 4ish minutes in length.

Callbacks: Sunday, December 20, 2020 (in person – if a callback is requested from you, you will be contacted to schedule a time)

COVID-19 Protocols

Callback times will be staggered and all participants (actors and team) will be required to wear face masks at all times when not socially distanced. Social distancing will also be enforced while in the waiting room, and participants will be required to sign-in and out of the building.

Synopsis

During a rain-drenched summer in New York City, a determined single-mother navigates both the unfathomable and spiritually enlightening aspects of caring for a chronically sick child. Mary Jane is a remarkable and compassionate portrait of one woman striving for grace, and the power of the surprising communities that surround us all. It is written by Pulitzer-prize finalist Amy Herzog and won the 2017 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for best play.

Roles to be Cast

The play is written for a cast of five female actors:

  • Mary Jane – A woman in her 30s
  • Ruthie – A building superintendent (60s/70s)
  • Sherry – A nurse (40s/50s)
  • Brianne – A Facebook friend (30s)
  • Amelia – Sherry’s niece, a college student (20s)
  • Dr. Toros – A pediatric intensivist (40s/50)
  • Chaya – A Hasidic woman (30s/40s)
  • Kat – A music therapist (20s)
  • Tenkei – A Buddhist nun (60s/70s)
