Archived February 25, 2020 Bionic Women Writers Experience This event has been postponed, visit wordfest.ca for more details. Once upon a time (okay, 1976), a champion tennis player became critically injured in a skydiving accident. Top cybernetic scientists rebuilt her, using bionic parts to make her exceptionally strong and fast, with super-heightened senses. Jaimie Sommers was now the Six Million Dollar Woman, a high-school teacher who worked undercover as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence. Seizing the opportunity to create Wordfest’s first writers conference, we couldn’t think of a better (or more unexpected) role model. The Bionic Women Writers Experience is the weekend getaway we all deserve to rebuild ourselves stronger, faster, and with ’70s hair. Are you an aspiring writer or an avid reader? An established author or an adventurous soul? An extroverted introvert or an introverted extrovert? This is the creative gathering for anyone who is curious about exploring and expressing their innate bionic powers. Sign up now to indulge in inspiring insights, uncensored conversations, priceless workshops, and one-on-one mentorship with four of Canada’s fiercest writers. The $180 Friday afternoon to Sunday morning conference package also includes a special feminist edition of Dick Lit’s Trivia Night and a bonus showcase featuring two of Spring 2020’s most-talked-about female authors. Of course, you don’t have to identify as a woman or even have hair to be welcome. Bionic power is for everyone! Power House Writers We’ve assembled an exclusive roster of fearless Canadians to help you break through your barriers: Gwen Benaway (Governor General’s Literary Award), Claire Cameron (longlisted for the Rogers Writers’ Trust and Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction), Kate Harris (RBC Taylor Prize) and Jenny Heijun Wills (Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize). Work It Girl Workshops With the conference pass, you can get exclusive access to not one, but two 90-minute workshops on Saturday focused on your choices of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and memoir. The earlier you sign up, the best chance you’ll have of getting your first picks. (Of course, getting out of your comfort zone is a big part of being Bionic, so checking out new genres might lead to great rewards.) Sign up now to secure your spot! Full schedule (and registration for individual events) is available when tickets and passes go on sale to the general public on Thursday, February 27, 2020. Cost: $180 Dates: April 3 – 5, 2020 Location: Memorial Park Library (1221 2nd St. SW) For more information or to register, visit showpass.com.
