Alberta Views is seeking a business manager to be responsible for the magazine’s day-to-day operations and effective functioning of the organization, working towards its short- and long-term strategic goals. This is a permanent, full-time, salaried position.

For over 25 years, the magazine has provided perspective on the province’s politics, social issues and culture with in-depth analysis relevant to the public interest of Albertans. It has been recognized as Magazine of the Year at both the Western and National Magazine Awards.

The Position

We are looking for a proactive individual with strong strategic, collaborative, communication and organizational skills, and an understanding of the political, social and cultural landscape of Alberta. The business manager helps to achieve the short- and long-term strategic goals of the magazine and to further its mission. The manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and effective functioning of the organization, overseeing and assisting the administrator in circulation and working closely with all departments of the magazine.

The business manager has the skills and eye for detail required to be proficient in working with our customer databases (Sequel) for communication with both advertisers and subscribers. They will liaise with ad clients to fill ad space. They will be trained in all circulation tasks in order to make strategic business decisions while overseeing the administrator of circulation. They will ensure the smooth running of the office. The Business Manager knows what’s going on in major Alberta arts institutions and public organizations in order to compile the Arts Scene and Guide sections of the magazine, thereby assisting the editor in creating a useful, informative magazine.

Editorial Tasks:

  • Update or compile the guide section of the magazine (lifelong learning, galleries, museums, travel, festivals, theatre, music, books, green, winter), using previous guides as a template, making them interesting for readers and attractive to advertisers
  • Compile Arts Scene (a listings of arts events around the province) according to template

Advertising Tasks

  • Update contact info for guide advertisers, e-mail them about the upcoming guide, send insertion orders and do ad traffic (get proofs approved)
  • Liaise with like-minded organizations to develop strategic advertising and co-promotional partnerships

Circulation Tasks

  • Develop strategies with the administrator of circulation to increase subscriptions through online and direct mail campaigns, and new initiatives
  • Know all circulation procedures as a backup
  • Oversee and assist with data entry of subscriptions & mail data preparation
  • Oversee the renewal series; renewal letters from templates provided
  • Oversee the processing of invoices, credit card payments, and bank deposits
  • Oversee newsstand and controlled distribution (insertion into newspapers)
  • Oversee annual special projects such as the short story contest, the holiday campaign, the readers survey and the circulation audit

Other Tasks

  • Oversee updating our website with new issue
  • Oversee posts to social media
  • Implement, maintain and update various administrative procedures as necessary
  • Onboard new employees
  • Provide feedback on preliminary layouts at all staff meeting
  • Manage IT concerns in the office and troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Aid in various office tasks as needed

Skills & Qualifications

  • University degree
  • Understanding of the mission and readers of Alberta Views
  • Good time management, efficiency; meets all deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to strategize and analyze data and to troubleshoot problems
  • Excellent writing skills, spelling, punctuation, grammar, clear concise style
  • Accurate research, fact checking and attention to detail
  • Computer skills: Word, Excel, Mail, Internet, data entry, website management
  • High level of technical curiosity (Alberta Views will provide training in InCopy, WordPress and Sequel databases)
  • Personable, outgoing, able to connect with people and quickly gather information
  • Relationships with arts organizations and a network of sources
  • Proactive approach to work

Job Specs & Work Environment

This is a permanent, full-time, salaried position (40hrs/w). Start date is April 3 – 11, 2023.
Alberta Views office is located in Mission and accessible via public transportation. Street parking is available in the area.
