Call for Sculptor/Carving Artist

Mount Royal University is looking to collaborate with an artist in Alberta on the creation of a University mace — a ceremonial piece to be showcased at convocation each year.

What’s a university mace?

The mace signifies the authority of the faculties and schools of the university to grant academic degrees, diplomas and certificates; of the board to grant honorary degrees; and of the chancellor to confer degrees, diplomas and certificates.

During the academic procession and recession, the mace is carried in the procession and is displayed during the ceremony.

Who we’re looking for:

  • A sculptor or carver who works with wood or another material. Also open to mixed materials.
  • An artist willing and able to create a proposed design for the university mace or who is able to use a proposed concept for inspiration.
  • An artist who has knowledge of Mount Royal University and its history, or is willing to learn, and can incorporate this into the design concept for the mace.
  • An artist who resides in Alberta and is familiar with materials and symbols unique to this province to incorporate into the mace.
  • An artist who is able to conceptualize and communicate their vision in an effective manner.

We encourage applications from artists of all levels. Artists who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Black, artists of colour, and artists with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation

This is a paid opportunity. All applicants are asked to submit a cost estimate and artist fee for the project.

How to apply

To apply, please fill out the following application form and include an outline of the associated costs (estimate), such as materials, with a grand total that includes the artist fee by January 5, 2024.

About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 38 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is Mohkinstsis, which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

Mount Royal University is committed to removing barriers and fostering the inclusion of voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged in our society. In support of our belief that diversity in our faculty and staff enriches the work, learning and research experiences for the entire campus community, we strongly encourage members of the designated groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and diverse sexual orientation and gender identities) to apply and self-identify.
