Climate Justice Zine Publication

We are tired of hearing about climate change. Its threat has been looming over us for so long, and we’ve learned every narrative: we know about the polar bears, the scientists, the corporations, the protests, the pessimists saying the tipping point has already passed. The stories we hear are great at sparking terror, guilt, rage, desperation, and, ultimately, apathy.

It gets old, doesn’t it? What about solidarity? What about understanding? What about balancing the urgency of the need to act with the belief that taking action is possible and meaningful?

This is not a place for telling the usual climate story. This is the place for your climate story—our climate story.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery and the Climate Justice Working Group are seeking submissions from Alberta students, artists, and writers for an Earth Day zine to be published in Spring 2022.

The submission deadline is March 15, 2022.

Subject Matter

We’re looking for honesty, introspection, community solidarity, and empathy. What do most discussions about climate change always seem to miss? Submissions can focus on climate change itself or on climate justice movements. Your submission can reference statistics, data, facts, etc. but the focus should be on what these facts mean to you, and how they have influenced your thoughts, beliefs, and actions.

Acceptable mediums include two-dimensional creative media of all kinds: essays, poems, lists, journal entries, illustrations, comics, photography, experimental media, etc. If you have an idea for an unconventional submission, contact us and we can discuss how it may effectively be included in this publication. Participants may submit up to three entries, but the jury may only select one for publication.

Submissions are open to Alberta-based artists and writers. Current students and recent graduates of Alberta colleges and universities will be prioritized.

Submissions must be original and previously unpublished works, inclusive of online publications. Writers retain all copyrights to their work; however, they consent to publication if their work is selected.
