Co-Lateral

Deadline: June 30, 2018, 12:00am MST

Send applications to collective1collective@gmail.com.

Our project is a statement in response to how Calgary’s cultural scene has been impacted by local politicians in recent years. The most recent cut to public art funding was made in early 2017. Collective Collective is using the Calgary Dollars Program to commission a local artist or collective to make a temporary public artwork. This artwork is meant to be a contrast to much of the public art in the citylarge permanent sculptures.

The successful applicant will submit a project in response to the theme of redefining wealth in the arts and community at large. It is recommended that the project include an interactive and social component. We welcome and encourage applicants from any creative field or discipline.

Submission Requirements:

  • Project Proposal (300-500 words, or five minutes video or audio file accepted).
  • Letter of Interest that explains why you are interested in the project.
  • Artist statement that describes the current creative practice.
  • Outline of how the $500 material budget will be used. (Total budget is $1000. $500 material, $500 artist fee in Calgary Dollars. Permits and food for the opening will be covered by the Collective separately).

Calgary Dollars

The heart of the project is Calgary Dollars contribution in helping spread awareness about alternative wealth systems. The selected artist(s) will receive their artist fee in Calgary Dollars and Collective Collective will provide additional support for the installation and promotion of the work. Calgary Dollars is a complementary currency system that was created by the local organization Arusha.

History of Collective Collective

In January 2017 members from ACADSA and Theatre Junction GRAND worked together to establish a series of Emerging Artist Soundings. These Soundings used a world cafe style to develop the topics that were relevant to the artists present about their current and future lives as Calgary artists. They brainstormed initiatives that could directly impact these issues. Collective is one of the initiatives that came out of these Soundings.

This multi-disciplinary group (open to visual artists, thespians, musicians, dancers and poets) meets once a month to share resources, offer support, and collaborate. We believe in supporting the resilience and creativity of the arts community of Calgary. Co-Lateral will be our first major contribution as a collective to the evolving art scenes of Calgary.
