We are looking to add a spectacular, qualified, part-time (15 to 30hrs/wk) communications specialist/manager to our world-class team.

We are a duo of sister companies; one an established Calgary company with local roots, a global reputation, and operating out of Calgary for 27 years (Alien In-Line), and the second an amazing startup story, born of necessity and complimentary to the ongoing operations of our skate school during the COVID pandemic (Alien Electrostatic). Job Profile

Nature of the work (to whom position reports, complexity and amount of work/peak periods, other conditions):

The communications specialist/manager (CS/M) reports to the managing director of Alien Intersport Ltd., which operates two sister companies—Alien In-Line (AIL) and Alien Electrostatic (AE). The position is part time averaging between 15 to 30 hours/week. Hours vary throughout the year ranging from one to eight hours a day with heavier volume and commitment necessary during the peak operating season (September to June). Some travel during the year may be required. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required as some of our operations take place during non-business hours.

Alien In-Line is one of the most successful in-line skating schools in the world and Canada’s leading school skating program reaching over 100,000 students and 325+ schools annually. Alien Electrostatic is a smaller sister company that was born during the COVID pandemic. AE specializes in sales of electrostatic disinfecting equipment and eco-friendly disinfecting solution, primarily serving sport-oriented clients. The environment in which this position functions is primarily the AIL/AE head office however the position also occasionally engages in the field with clients and staff. AIL is also occasionally involved with various events (both sporting and non-sporting).

The communications specialist/manager is responsible for both internal and external communications of Alien In-Line and Alien Electrostatic. The CS/M, working with department leadership and staff, plans, builds and executes promotional initiatives of AIL and AE ensuring the highest quality communications and outreach possible. The communications specialist/manager maintains a close working relationship with the AIL/AE managing director as well as other managerial positions and team leaders within the organizations to ensure the continued success of the AIL and AE missions.

Primary Purpose of the Position (Key purpose, functions, roles):

  • The primary objective of this position is ensuring excellence in internal and external communications with the intent on building AIL’s profile and reputation as the premier in-line skating school in the world.
  • A secondary objective is to assist AE’s continued communications and promotional objectives.
  • To continually seek new and innovative methods of improving the communications and marketing of AIL/AE’s programs, products and profiles.
  • Responsible for the overall administration of AIL/AE’s communications.
  • Coordination of effort with all areas of AIL/AE to realize such goals is essential.
  • Accountable for preparation and oversight of expenditures related to communications aspects of AIL/AE and respecting budgetary guidelines, timelines and deadlines. The communications specialist/manager is also responsible for ensuring AIL/AE policies and procedures are respected with regard to this area of focus.
  • Such tasks require that the incumbent be able to work under pressure and multitask effectively.
  • Forms a close working relationship with the AIL/AE managing director, management team, and touches all areas of AIL and AE. The position also acts as a liaison with various agencies in the field and other supporting partners, sponsors and entities.
Qualifications/Expertise Required

The following skills and experience are necessary for the position of AIL communications specialist/manager:

  • The incumbent will possess or will be working toward a college or university degree/diploma/certificate in the area of communications design or with an equivalent level of field experience. A specialization in the area of advertising and graphic design and/or equivalent through a minimum of three years of related experience is a requirement of the position. Experience or training in the field of communications, marketing, and/or promotions is a strong asset.
  • Strong people skills, excellent communication (both written and verbal) ability, experience with problem solving, exceptional organization, high decision-making ability, and a strong multitasking ability are necessary for this position.
  • Basic experience in the field of photography and video, working with photo/video editing software and a basic understanding of right of use and working with copyrighted material is a requirement of the position.
  • Experience and understanding of working with domains and domain registrations/licensing, website software and strategies for maximizing engagement of web-based search engines is a necessary part of the position (Google and others). Experience with web page design & software is also necessary.
  • Experience with popular and evolving social media platforms, target marketing and social media advertising including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok is a requirement of the position.
  • A high level of software skills for MS Office Suite/MS 365, Google Docs and Forms, Adobe Illustrator/InDesign, and Mailchimp, is a requirement. A strong knowledge and comfort level of working with various business communications and organizational software including but not limited to point of sale, registration and inventory software is an asset.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with teams and small groups, and the ability to conduct oneself in a positive professional manner is a must for this position.
  • Knowledge of public and private school systems and respective policies and procedures are an asset.
  • Experience with in-line skating or any type of skating sports is a strong asset.
