Concert in the 21st Century

Concert in the 21st Century is designed for classical musicians or ensembles to provide an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals engaged in presenting classical music today. Participants will take a closer look at the existing concert format and explore new ways to present classical and contemporary music. This program is designed for musicians who want to go beyond the traditional concert experience.

What does the Program Offer?

Participants will be provided with the time to think and create, the opportunity to consult one-on-one with faculty members and participate in lively discussions, and will be immersed in concert in the 21st century. Each artist who is accepted into this residency will be given an opportunity to work with Banff Centre’s Media + Production department on a short promotional video about themselves and their work.

Building on previous innovative residencies with Pedja Muzijevic, Concert in the 21st Century offers an informal, nurturing though intense, learning environment for participants to gain skills in concert curation and making important performance decisions. These decisions include concert lengths, performer placements, lighting, overall concert experience, and video documentation. In addition, space and technical support will be available for a limited number of classical music collectives coming with interdisciplinary artists such as dancers, actors, lighting designers, or video artists.

Who Should Apply?

Applications are welcome from musicians wanting to learn about concert presentation and curation, as well as musicians in the process of developing new innovative presentations for the stage. Chamber music groups are also welcome to apply.
