Celebrating 60 years, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has been a cornerstone of Calgary’s multi-faceted arts community since 1955 and is one of North America’s finest and most versatile live music ensembles. A repertoire that is extensive and broad in scope consistently attracts acclaimed guest artists and conductors. From the world’s greatest classics, to pops and family programming, the Calgary Philharmonic offers an average of 70 concerts per Season, plus an exciting and diverse community outreach program designed to appeal to all ages and tastes.

The Role

Do you have a passion to communicate, with a talent for writing entertaining and informative copy? Do you have an eye and ear for a great angle, enabling you to craft a compelling pitch to excite media in the Orchestra’s activities and goals? Do you have limitless ideas to contribute to a dynamic and engaging communications plan? If so, we are looking for a creative and enthusiastic full-time Communications Manager to join the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s Marketing team.

The ideal candidate would have proven industry connections in the arts and entertainment communications field and possess a passion for music and non-profit arts organizations. Previous experience in writing professional copy, managing an in-house magazine, preparing exciting content and a limitless enthusiasm in telling compelling stories about the Orchestra and its musicians both on and off-stage is required. The ability to take a great photo would also be an asset. The candidate must demonstrate the core values of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra with particular emphasis on customer service, professionalism, sound judgment, and ethics.

Skills:

  • Proven experience in creating professionally written content including press releases, blogs, interviews, advertorial and feature articles.
  • Proven success in securing media including radio, TV, print and digital media on a local, regional and national level.
  • Confident communicator, both written and oral, capable of representing the Orchestra at the highest levels.
  • Project management experience, with success in adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Friendly team player, comfortable in working closely alongside colleagues

Qualifications:

  • University graduate with a Communications, PR, Media or Marketing qualification.
  • Three years Communication/Marketing  work experience.
  • Some Adobe Suite experience, in particular InCopy.
  • Previous experience with WordPress websites an asset.
  • DSLR camera experience an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and secure media for concerts and events, act as primary contact when media is present.
  • Develop creative media stories on the Orchestra and musicians for a wide range of outlets including themes on outreach, behind-the-scenes, community.
  • Produce and edit the Prelude in-house program: Create a flat plan, gather and compile information, coordinate concert content, write copy for features and liaise with publishing house.
  • Proofread and edit a range of communication pieces and collateral.
  • Coordinate additional in-house printed programs when required.
  • Devise and activate an annual communications plan for the organization.
  • Prepare onstage speeches for all concerts and events.
  • Advance internal communications between departments.
  • Update and grow the media contact database.
  • Assist the Digital Media Coordinator in social media plan and content creation, ensuring the communications and digital media plan are seamlessly coordinated.
  • Support the Marketing Director with marketing activity schedule.
  • Track and archive media stories and the orchestra’s photography assets.
  • Field media queries and provide photographs to media outlets.
  • Assist with website and social media updates.
  • Other duties as required.

Salary and Schedule:

  • 40 hours a week—with some additional evening and/or weekend events required.
  • Salary commensurate upon experience.

Reporting:

The Communications Manager works closely alongside the Digital Media Coordinator and reports to the Director, Sales & Marketing.
