New Voices Production & Mentorship Program

Updated Submission Deadline: Monday, June 11, 2018

New Voices is a production and mentorship program from Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) that aims to provide Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth with the opportunity to learn and create works of art on Super 8 film on a full scholarship, thanks to a grant from Calgary Foundation!

Led by established filmmakers and industry mentors, students will work collaboratively as they learn the basics of filmmaking and how to shoot on Super 8 film cameras. Topics that will be explored include (but are not limited to) screenwriting, sound recording, blocking, operating film equipment, the chemical process behind developing film, and splicing/editing Super 8 film. With the help of their fellow participants, each student will get to create their very own short film. The films will then be screened for the public at the 27th Artifact Small Format Film Festival in March of 2019.

The goals of the New Voices program are simple: to diversify the voices in celluloid and filmmaking in general, as well as to give youth the confidence, skills, and support to express themselves creatively in a unique and timeless art-form.
