Job Opportunities July 27, 2023 Curator, Indigenous Art Job: Full-time term position Date: October 2023 – July 2025, (extension subject to funding) Closing Date: August 13, 2023 Interview Dates: September 5 – 22, 2023 Projected Start Date: October 16, 2023 Salary: CUPE Local 1645, Salary Grade 7, $2,411.48 – $3,055.13 bi-weekly In recognition of the critical importance of a lived understanding of Indigenous communities, history, values and cultural competencies to this role, preference will be given to Indigenous candidates. Glenbow will require those applicants selected for an interview to verify their Indigenous identity by submitting written documentation or a self-declaration that includes specific information about their ongoing relationship to a legally recognized and inherent Indigenous community, Nation, or people, in North America. The Opportunity Reporting to the manager, curatorial, the curator, Indigenous art will research, develop and deliver a rotating program of innovative exhibitions that will help contextualize contemporary Indigenous art and cultural belongings within the broader context of Canadian art and Indigenous cultural practices. Glenbow’s cultural belongings originate primarily from the Plains, however, we also steward belongings from Métis communities, the Northwest Coast, the sub-Arctic and the Arctic as well as other areas of North America, with the majority of belongings created between 1880 and 1960. We also hold works by Indigenous artists in our art collection, including prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture, with a large collection of Inuit sculpture. Glenbow is committed to contributing positively to reconciliation. Since the 1990s, Glenbow has repatriated many belongings to Indigenous communities and is working with the provincial government to support more repatriation efforts as a way to decolonize and reimagine the Glenbow museum experience. The curator, Indigenous art will provide expertise, lead when appropriate, and contribute to discussions regarding reconciliation and decolonization within museums.
