Director of Arts Production

Calgary Opera is one of the most innovative and ambitious professional opera companies in Canada and is looking to bring on a new director of arts production to join the leadership team. This role is responsible for all production projects and related staff, including planning, preparation, management and financial oversight. This position also works closely with the artistic director on projects and planning and is a key communicator with artistic partners in the community, helping to nurture those relationships.

As the director of production, your day-to-day responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide oversight for all areas of production including the development and maintenance of systems, processes, purchasing, royalties and documentation.
  • Create and manage administrative duties including budgets, schedules, critical plan timelines, archival materials and reports.
  • Prepare forecasts and expense reports for all production activities, ensuring the timely processing of invoices and time sheets.
  • Develop season and production calendars.
  • Serve as the primary contact and scheduler with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium to ensure production needs and logistics are arranged.
  • Recruit and manage all stage management personnel; supervise the technical director who is responsible for construction, load-in, set-up, rehearsal, performance and strike.
  • Ensure proper operation of facilities, including the Opera Centre and warehouse, and manage Opera Centre rentals.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with leadership, designers and the artistic team.
  • In conjunction with the general director & CEO, negotiate collective bargaining agreements with IATSE and CAEA.
  • Act as the main contact and maintain lasting relationships with contractors.
  • Stay current with theatrical technology, safety and participate in national forums.

The right candidate will demonstrate on their resume:

  • 5+ years’ experience with rehearsal and performance requirements and processes.
  • Proven experience with scenery, wardrobe, properties, lighting, projections, and special effects.
  • Training in production management or related experience.
  • Previous experience leading a team.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is an asset.
