EMMEDIA is proud to present Diversity in Lighting, a two-part workshop led by the incredible Diane Din-Ebongue. Rather than a course about how to do the perfect lighting, this two-part course is more about fundamentals to consider when we work with diverse skin tones, getting a better understanding of how the skin and light interaction works and exploring the social representations we have of skin tones. There will be a theoretical portion and a more practical portion. Both parts of the workshop will be held in person at our main space, 2005B 10th Ave. SW, on June 3 and 4 (Saturday and Sunday) from 1 to 4pm. Tickets are for both parts of this workshop series.

You can expect to learn about the following topics:

• Understanding the structure of the skin (biology).
• Fundamentals about lighting (optical physics).
• Optical physics applied to skin tones.
• Colour theory (visual arts).
• Typologies of the skin and colour analysis also known as skin tone matching (sociology, cosmetics and fashion).
• Deconstructing the idea of skin tone accuracy (vision science and sociology of technology).

This two-part workshop explores the fundamentals to consider when we work with diverse skin tones. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of how the skin & light interaction works, while exploring the social representations we have of skin tones.

About the Instructor

Diane Din Ebongue is a Cameroonian-born and French-raised interdisciplinary artist and arts manager passionate about intangible cultural heritage, skin tone representation in media arts, empowerment processes and knowledge sharing through arts. After obtaining a master’s degree in Sciences, Arts and Techniques of Image and Sound at Aix-Marseille University in 2014, she worked as an audiovisual technician and arts manager in France, Australia and more recently, in Canada. She is currently developing a collection of mixed media artworks exploring the perception of skin tones and their connections to ethno-cultural identities, with funding from Calgary Arts Development, and the support of The Grand, Fuse33 Makerspace, Humainologie and Emmedia Gallery and Production Society.
