Exploring Shakespeare

For teachers, actors and directors of any experience level.

This workshop is suited to actors, directors or teachers who are interested in deepening their understanding of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet while learning fun techniques and useful tools that can be applied to any of Shakespeare’s texts.

Participants will interact with the text in ways which will:

  • Awaken the emotional, imaginative and physical worlds of the play.
  • Offer a better understanding of how Shakespeare uses heightened language, rhetorical devices and verse structure to dramatic effect.
  • Inspire personally connected and intellectually dynamic performances.

Whether you are well versed in Shakespeare or a relative newcomer, this workshop will give you tools for working with heightened text in creative and playful ways; encouraging you to expand your understanding, deepen your personal connection, and activate your imagination.

Instructor Bio

Iam Coulter is an actor, director, arts administrator and teaching artist with a specialized focus in Shakespeare performance. She recently returned to Calgary after a month of teaching Macbeth at ARTSTREK – Theatre Alberta’s acclaimed summer program for teens. Next up, Iam is directing the Calgary premiere of the stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love for Morpheus Theatre.

Following the completion of a BFA from the University of Calgary, Iam performed with companies such as: Citadel Theatre, Theatre Calgary, The Shakespeare Company, Vertigo Mystery Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, and Theatre Junction. Iam discovered a passion for Shakespeare during her years as the artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company in Calgary AB. She left that position in order to train extensively with Shakespeare & Company in Lenox MA and currently continues her ongoing teaching apprenticeship with the company.
