We’ve just released our Fall workshop schedule!
Between October and November 2018, we will be offering:
Screenwriting 101
This 10-week workshop will take you through the ins and outs of basic screenwriting format, language, and structure. Participants will write in and out of class to discover and develop screen stories, learn methods of developing authentic characters, and analyze scenes and story sequences to understand conflict, rising action, and character arcs.
Deadline to register is Saturday, September 28, 2018.
Cinematography
Explore how cinematographers use their artistry, craft, and technology to author images that support the director’s interpretation of the story. Participants will examine how the quality, angle, colour, and quantity of light affects or influences the image. Composition, lens selection, depth of field, aspect ratio, camera height, and camera movement—and their collective effect on the story— are discussed.
The workshop also reviews how cinematographers work collaboratively with the director, production designer or art director, and other members of the production team to create a film’s ‘look’— all with a goal to provide participants techniques they can implement on their productions.
Please note that this workshop is more theoretical-based than hands-on.

Grip & Lighting
The two-day workshop will cover general lighting theory, creative and dramatic lighting, colour and light quality, different types of lights and their uses, how to set up efficiently, power distribution, and tips on working safely.
This workshop will include both a theoretical portion and a hands-on portion.
Deadline to register is Monday, October 15, 2018.
Shooting on Film
Have you wondered what would it would be like to shoot a scene on actual motion picture film? In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of exposure and camera operation with 16mm and Super 8mm cameras as they shoot a scene for a silent film. A variety of film stocks will be used so that participants can learn how each stock affects the story and the overall look of the film. After the film is processed, participants will return to view the results. Some shooting may take place outdoors, so please dress for the weather.

Shooting with the Scarlet
In this workshop, participants will learn how to use CSIF’s Red Scarlet MX camera and all its accessories.
The Scarlet MX is a completely flexible device, utilizing HDRx and interchangeable lens mounts so you don’t have to replace your existing lens collection. Shoot motion video and stills images at 5K resolution up to 12 frames per second, or up to 30 frames per second at 4K.
This workshop is mandatory prior to renting CSIF’s RED Scarlet MX.

Introduction to Location Sound for Film & Video

One of the best ways to add production value to your work is by making sure that you get great sound while you shoot. Although it seems like a complicated task, there are some simple things that you can do to get beautiful, present sound that professional productions are known for.
In this two-day workshop you’ll get an introduction to the CSIF’s new sound equipment and also learn some best practices when picking locations, how to boom, and the basics of wireless lavaliere microphone use.
This workshop is mandatory for any members interested in using CSIF’s Sound Devices 633 Mixer/Recorder (unless proficiency can be proven otherwise).
The Digital Bolex

Kickstarted in mid-2012, the Digital Bolex D16 has captured the imaginations of filmmakers with its analog aesthetic and unique design. The camera and its images have evolved significantly over the years, maturing into an asset that can give your project a look that is unique in the landscape of digital cinematography. Still, the D16 is not without its pitfalls and requires a deft hand to operate, expose, and handle through post-production. Join Alex Mitchell to learn some of the tips and tricks of using the D16 on set, as well as a brief primer on dependable workflow options for your project.

8mm Transfer Workshop
Learn how to digitize Super 8 and standard 8mm films! This workshop will introduce participants to the proper operation and functionality of CSIF’s Retro-Scan 8 telecine transfer system. This system is very simple to set-up and operate, meaning almost anyone can make quality transfers with a minimum of training. The Retro-Scan 8 can transfer films in at 24bit (8:8:8) colour-space with square pixel aspect ratio in either HD or SD resolution and features SafeScan (zero contact at the gate and rubber rollers), handling films only by the edges, meaning that even damaged films with broken sprockets, shrinkage, or bad splices can be transferred on this system with excellent results.
This workshop is mandatory prior to accessing CSIF’s Retro-Scan 8.
