Instructors for Artstrek

The application deadline for this opportunity has passed.

Artstrek—Theatre Alberta’s summer school/camp for teens—is seeking dedicated, passionate instructors for its 2020 program. Each year, the instructional team, led by a curriculum director, is contracted to instruct students in the areas of acting, text analysis, music, design, voice, movement, and directing, with a focus on a specific, pre-selected theatre script.

Artstrek’s 2020 curriculum will explore a contemporary play. The instructional team plays a key role in welcoming young artists from across the province into the Albertan theatre community, fostering their artistic development, and showing them that they belong.

About Artstrek

Artstrek runs for three weeks each July at Red Deer College, with a different age group of students attending each week known as explorations.

Student acceptance to all explorations is based on commitment, enthusiasm, and a recommendation from a teacher or community member—we don’t hold auditions.

Artstrek aims to develop students’ theatre skills and theatre appreciation, as well as life competency skills like problem-solving, leadership, self-esteem, and teamwork.

The program has been running in the province of Alberta for the past 59 years. For more information on Artstrek visit theatrealberta.com/artstrek.

About the Position

Artstrek instructors are contracted to be on-site at Red Deer College from Tuesday, June 30 through Saturday, July 25, 2020, to develop curriculum and provide instruction for Exploration I, II, and III.

  • Instructors are provided shared accommodation on campus at Red Deer College and provided daily meals for the duration of the contract.
  • Artstrek instructors arrive on-site at Red Deer College one week prior to the commencement of the program (June 30 to July 3, 2020) and work together to develop the curriculum.
  • All subjects at Artstrek are team-taught. Instructors work in pairs to develop and deliver classes in their area of expertise each week.
  • Artstrek 2020 is divided into three separate weeks of instruction (explorations) for different age groups.
    • Theatre Exploration I (July 5 – 10, 2020): This six-day program is for enthusiastic theatre lovers who are 13 and 14 years old.
    • Theatre Exploration II (July 12 – 17, 2020): This six-day program is for 15 and 16-year-olds with an interest in theatre and a dedication to increasing their knowledge and skill level.
    • Theatre Exploration III (July 19 – 25, 2020): This seven-day program is for 17 and 18-year-olds who have demonstrated a commitment to theatre practice and education.
  • Instructors teach four 70-minute classes each day (typically 16 to 20 students per class), as well as participating in daily warm-up activities, regular meetings, and some evening activities.
  • Artstrek supers—typically emerging artists who have recently attended the program—assist with administrative tasks and the smooth, day-to-day running of the program. Supers also provide support and supervision for students outside of class time.

Application packages should include:

  • A work resume that outlines areas particularly pertinent to working with youth.
  • A theatre resume that demonstrates your theatrical experience, performance-based or otherwise.
  • A cover letter that outlines your area(s) of artistic practice, why you are interested in teaching at Artstrek, and what skills/experience you would bring to a collaborative teaching team.

Hiring Notes

Theatre Alberta is committed to inclusive hiring. We encourage applications from artists who self-identify as members of under-represented communities. Artstrek is a safe space that welcomes and fosters diversity, both in our staff and our students.

As Artstrek contracts a new team of instructors around a new script each year, we encourage applications from a broad range of artistic backgrounds. If your area of expertise does not necessarily line up with this year’s play selection, we will keep your resume on file for future opportunities.

For more information or to apply please submit your application package in PDF format by email to  jake@theatrealberta.com.
