Looking for Local Artists

The residency program at ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv provides an opportunity for local artists from across all disciplines to pursue their practice in a supportive, concentrated, community-based atmosphere. It is open to artists from all backgrounds, at any stage in their career, including recent graduates, emerging, or established professionals. Mid-career and established artists are encouraged to apply as we can provide space and equipment free of charge and will help to coordinate a number of public engagement opportunities.

While a resident artist at ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv you will have access to the following facilities, dependent on your media and area of interest:

  • Your own workshop, outfitted with supplies.
  • Conference room access.

We are able to offer some technical support (area and volunteer dependent), but artists are expected to be mostly self-sufficient in the spaces they will be working in. Residencies range between a minimum of one month to a maximum of one year. ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv will take images of works produced during the residency for program documentation and publicity purposes. The artist retains all copyright over their work.

Artists Responsibilities

As community engagement is an important part of this residence, applicants will choose from the following activities:

  • Provide a public artist’s talk or workshop.
  • Provide at least 20 hours per week that you will work on site and be interactive with the public.
  • Provide at least three works that can be displayed in the gallery during your tenure with ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv.
  • Have a monthly meeting with (more frequently if necessary) with administrator to go over what supplies you have used and what you will need for the upcoming month so that it can be supplied.

Where possible, we would also request that artists donate a piece of work indicative of their time at ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv. These pieces will be used in future fundraisers to continue our commitment to community arts programming in Calgary.
