The Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is looking for an experienced and analytical manager, budget & reporting, to lead the development of institutional planning and budgeting process for the University.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the vice president, finance and operations, the manager, budgeting and reporting provides leadership in the areas of budget and grant management to align with the University’s mandate, mission, and strategic goals. This role will have primary responsibility for forecasting, financial planning, analysis as well as leading system and process improvements.

This role will oversee direct reports with responsibilities in budgeting and reporting, as well as functional direction to others in the department and organization regarding budget processes, providing advice to ensure compliance and meeting operational needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of institutional planning and budgeting process (both revenue and cost), including developing the budget manual, regular financial reports and templates. Develop and implement analysis forecasting and trending budget performance and institutional financial positioning, regularly working with department budget owners across the organization to monitor and revise budgets throughout the year and life of project(s).
  • Liaise with internal departments and leaders to ensure compliance with current budget and spending policies, and propose improved policies and systems regarding spending guidelines, cost savings, cost allocation, and annual planning.
  • Manage team including hiring, performance and developmental management and work assignment. Provide training to staff on budget management processes and systems. Work with the finance team to streamline internal financial reports and reporting processes to deliver more efficient, more effective, and more useful reports and analysis.

  • Manage team including hiring, performance and developmental management and work assignment. Provide training to staff on budget management processes and systems. Work with the Finance team to streamline internal financial reports and reporting processes to deliver more efficient, more effective, and more useful reports and analysis.
  • Work with grants management team to ensure that key processes and systems are in place to manage grant risk assessments, donor financial compliance, and reporting management processes. Closely monitor grant performance for major institutional donors, ensuring grants budgets align with institutional budgets and forecasts.
  • Design, lead and implement various projects including budgeting, forecasting, and performance dashboard tools, templates, and SOP’s. Provide training to staff on updated processes and systems. Represent the department in various committees, as assigned. Assist the VP of Finance and Operations, and leadership team on special projects that require financial analysis.

To be successful in this manager, budget & reporting role you will hold a CPA, MBA or CFA designation along with five-plus years experience within a complex public sector, educational institution or NPO environment. You will bring strong analytical, financial modelling and critical thinking to enhance the budget process and internal reporting, work collaboratively with the various Committees and Operations Departments to review business initiatives, analyze capital/operating expenses, prepare presentations, develop business cases, improve use of fund reporting and processes for decision making.

AUArts offers an attractive benefit package, with annual salary dependent upon skills, education and experience.
